n00b question

By Ragnarok85, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi guys,

Have a question that might be obvious, but it's left me confused. Also, sorry to post this as a new topic... I couldn't find anything after a search and the FAQ is what created my confusion in the first place.

My question involves surge abilities & stacking. My group has been playing that they don't stack. The FAQ says they do (in reference to special abilities), then gives an example that to me is ambiguous. So I thought I'd construct my own example to get a better answer.

Let's say I have just rolled two surges in my attack. I am carrying a weapon with the following text:

Srg: +1 Damage
Srg Srg: Pierce 3

Do I get both +1 Damage and Pierce 3, or do I have to choose between the two? We have been playing that you have to choose between the two... in which case you would need to roll three surges to get +1 Dam and Pierce 3.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You spend (use) surges to get the effects. So if you had two surges you could use them to get +1 Damage (twice, so +2 damage) or Pierce 3, not both with the same surges. If you had 3 surges you could use 2 of them to get +3 Pierce and the other one to get +1 damage.

DJitD pg 10
Using Power Surges (Heroes): Many of the dice have power surges on them. A hero player may use his rolled power surges to trigger a variety of special effects , (note the plural) depending on the weapon used. A weapon’s item card always lists the effects (again, the plural) that a hero may trigger with power surges when attacking with that weapon. A hero may trigger a specific effect more than once for a single attack , as long as he rolled enough power surges to do so. Note that there are some effects that will provide no additional benefit if they are triggered more than once. Any power surges that a hero does not immediately use to trigger effects are lost - they cannot be "saved" for a later attack.
Example: When a hero attacks with the Mace of Kellos, he may use his rolled power surges to trigger two different effects. The weapon’s item card reads, “~~: +1 Damage” and “~~: This attack gains Knockback.”
This means that a hero player can use two power surges to either increase the attack’s damage by 1 or give the attack the Knockback ability. If the hero player rolled four power surges, he could use them to give the attack +1 damage and Knockback,
(note using both options at once, as long as each surge is only used once) or he could use them to simply grant the attack +2 damage. No additional benefit would be gained from giving the attack the Knockback ability more than once.
Note that the last sentence about no additional benefits for multiple knockback is no longer correct as Knockback now stacks after changes in one of the expansions.

Basic rules answered that one easily enough... Thanks Corbon.
