Newbies first games with the Empire

By Rendorin, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Hi all,

As promised I thought I would provide a quick update on how my second game went using the new 100 Point List I had put together, for ease I have highlighted below:

Pilot: Krasis Trelix (46)

Firespray-31

Upgrades:

Heavy Laser Canon (7)

Recon Specialist (3)

Pilot: Captain Jonus (29)
TIE Bomber
Upgrades:

Squad Leader (2)

Assault Missiles (5)

Pilot: Scimitar Squadron Pilot (25)
TIE Bomber

Upgrades:

Cluster Missiles (4)

Assault Missiles (5)

Total Squad Points: 100

I played 2 games against the following lists:

REBEL OPPONENT GAME ONE

Pilot: Wedge w/Marksmanship & R2-D2

Pilot: Luke w/Marksmanship & R2-F2

Pilot: Tycho w/Push the Limit

REBEL OPPONENT GAME TWO

Pilot: Tycho w/Push the Limit

Pilot: Biggs w/R2-D2

Pilots: 2 x Rookie X-Wing

In summary I lost both games. The first game started well as I achieved to get TL/Focus off on Scimitar and with secondary re-rolls from Jonus on Krassis shot-down Luke in Turn-2. After that things went from bad to worse as Tycho along with Wedge picked off my team, and my ability to manoeuvre the large Firespray-31 (turning dial wrong way at one point!) was tested but learnt a few good pointers. Bombers are sturdy but suffer from critical hits.

The second game went a little better but numbers told for the rebels. Tycho was again the nemesis, Biggs was destroyed early on and eventually destroyed one Rookie and reduced the other to 1 damage left, but the Firespray-31 was unable to finish the game off eventually falling to Tycho.

I have a new found respect for Tycho after both games but I think there is still merit in the list I used, it will just take a little more experience to fly it properly and get some results from using it against the opposition.

Way ahead may take 2 paths, first may be to go for a 4 x TIE Bomber list or a 2

x Firespray-31 list. The first of these has been inspired by a recent post on this forum. The second will a take a bit of work/research to develop further. Whatever may be must stop the rot and ensure that the ‘Empire Strikes Back’.

I would've gone for Wedge in game one first, as his ability is just too good, while Luke's ability is purely defensive. Tycho is a bit interesting, on one hand Stress doesn't prevent him from taking actions, but on the other he becomes more predictable due to being unable to execute red maneuvers.

But he has so many red maneuvers, and he can still take actions even if he does a white manuver. I lost to tycho in a duel with soontir because of that fact. I thought my opponent was going to turn short, but he turned at three instead and mangaged to knock out my last hit point.

Do you mean so many "Green" maneuvers? The only red I recall on the A-Wing are the K-turns. Tycho may be able to hold all kinds of stress but when he does he can't K-turn anymore.

Now a Garven mentions in battle 1 Wedge should have been target #1. Getting out flown doesn't help either.

Against either squad Tycho was going to give you problems when you don't have the number to box him.

And this really for me is the issue. Generally speaking, Imperial squads have a harder time when you bring only 3 ships. There are notable exceptions, but there really isn't anything in this list which can stick around. Sure, the Firespray-31 can evade, but then you are neglecting the Recon Specialist. The lack of evade paired with only 2 agility means that the TIE Bomber will go down hard quickly too.

The ship choices themselves are not bad, but as soon as you fire the missiles you really are betting on the Trelix's HLC, as you'll just have two fatter TIE Fighters.

Welcome Academy Pilot!

Take 6 of your closest class mates and follow Howlrunner into battle for victory against those rebel scum!

Thanks for comments, as previously stated will definately be re-visiting the list, the synergy looked good on paper but failed to meet expectation. Time to re-hit the drawing board.

Will look to keep you posted on my trials and tribulations.

Every day is a school day ;)
