New to Game.

By Originaljkz, in X-Wing

Hey guys,

my local comic book shop just picked this game up and it seems to be picking up popularity (understandably) and I'd like to make my self a proper functioning squadron that adheres to the playing rules and functions well enough at a casual/semi-competitive level.

So my question to you guys. What faction do I go with, and what ships/pilots do I use?

Thanks guys! ^_^

Also,

tips on upgrade combinations that work well together in the specific squadron of ships is much appreciated!

Cheers!

Faction's up to you. Both have huge awesomeness in their hands.

One easy combo for beginners to kick butt with is the so-called "Han Shoots First" fleet. The core of this is any of the named YT-1300 pilots with Gunner, but particularly Han Solo. Fly it with two X-wings or y-wings with Ion Cannons and just simply own (until someone figures out how to run Swarm).

Swarm fleets are ones with 5-8 ships, which will make short work of the 1 agility YT-1300.

Thanks Dracon! Swarm sounds like fun! My friend.. well the shop owner said he's going to make a rebel squadron, so I guess that leaves me with Imperials! I heard the Slave-1 is the equivalent to the Millennium Falcon. Thoughts? Worth picking up?

Thanks man!

Firespray-31 is probably the most survivable ship in the game. Ignoring the upgrades that come with it (I'd assume you can proxy as a beginning league), you get 4 excellent pilots.

The smallest, the Bounty Hunter, is a Level 3 pilot for 33 points. Yes, that means you can run 3 of them (!!!).

The next smallest is probably the most often run: Krassis Trellix, at 36 points. He's a level 5, but he gets a free re-roll every time he fires a secondary weapon. This is particularly useful when you equip him with the most expensive upgrade in the game: the Heavy Laser Cannon. The HLC is 7 points worth of awesome, because A) its a secondary weapon, which means at Range 3 your opponent doesn't get any bonus dice, and B) it means you're rolling 4 dice, regardless of range. Give him a Gunner or a Recon Specialist as well, and you're good to go!

The third smallest is probably the least run Firespray-31 pilot, as she's only 1 point less expensive than the most expensive pilot the Firespray has to offer. Kath Scarlet's ability to turn missed Crits into Stress looks very potent on paper, but I've never seen a fleet that can get her to Crit frequently enough.

Boba Fett is the level 9 pilot, and his ability is deceptively useful. If you use Navigator with him, selecting any banking maneuver is, in fact, selecting ALL of them. Simultaneously. This is called "Fettigator"

The upgrade suite on the Firespray is amazing.
The Cannon port for Heavy Laser, Ion, or Autoblaster are three of the best offensive upgrade spots. Unlike the rest of the secondary weapons, you don't have to discard Cannons or Turrets (the latter on Y-Wings and HWK-290s), so they give you lots of utility.

The Bomb port is the second interesting spot, only available otherwise on the appropriately named Bomber. 2 of the Bombs don't require an action OR an attack to use; they're just free damage. The Proximity Mine costs an Action, but it rolls for 3 dice of damage against 0 evasion dice, so you can potentially 1-shot something with it.

Finally, don't discount mobility upgrades (Engine Upgrade for Boost and Expert Handling for Barrel Roll). Either one of them is a HUGE shift in position when you're dealing with large base ships.

Finally, in support of my claim that it's the most survivable ship:

- It is the only ship with 2 evasion dice with the Evade action.

- It has 10 total HP underneath that 2 evasion dice.

If you're going to talk about the Firespray you should also mention that it is the source for those popular "Stealth Device" upgrades which give a ship +1 Defense die until it is hit by an attack.

Also the source of "Gunner". But I assume that new players aren't looking to buy ships for the upgrade cards that come with them: you can proxy them until you're attending a tournament that requires it.

Definitely get that Firespray if you're playing Imperials. My friend and I just ran a 200 pointer, with him using 3 X's, a B, a Y, and a HWK that pretty much decimated my TIE swarm (mostly named pilots, he killed Howlrunner first) and then left Vader and the interceptors pretty much crippled, as they were supposed to be the hit & run group while the swarm did most of the damage...

Definitely regretted not taking the Firespray, especially since he had no Falcon.

Let's all jump on the great things about the Firespray. This was alluded to when it was called the most survivable ship in the game. It is the only large ship with 2 agility. It is almost like an X-wing but with 10 HIts.

Oh, and it is one of the coolest looking ships ever. (That's not just my opinion it is official ;) )
