Character Creator/Sheet: A Google Drive Project

By Serif Marak, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Here is the original project. Not 100% done, but pretty close.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuGz_7ngxHI-dEJaR3luTGZXS1ByUndhNmg0dFVsaVE&usp=sharing

It is meant to be used in Google Docs with both the GM and the Player keeping it open at the same time. It is meant to be saved by the GM to their drive and accessed by the player by sharing it.

Again, it isn't complete yet, but as it stands, it suffices for almost everything.

Now, I don't want to say too much, but I think I may have a solution to the coding problem I was having before, for those of you who have been following along....

I wanted to be able to have the GM and the Player have open the exact same information at the same time, be able to keep certain bits of information private (like character history and obligations), and allow GM and Players to communicate with each other with ease....

I had several different ideas come to me today while I perused the shelves of my local Barnes and Noble, and finally settled on something that SHOULD work.

Theoretically.

Suffice it to say that it will be free, should (almost positively) not be a violation of any copyrights, and that I will need several people to help me test it.

A lot.

I'm anxious to start. >=D

hello Serif marak will there be a starship sheet to the project you are working on?

On THIS project, no. However, there will be another, what I call the Group Tracker, that will have vehicle information. I will be figuring out how to keep the information concise, easy to understand, and readily available. My goal is, essentially, to have a page on that sheet that is capable of handling a flagship and several starfighters on board. The hard part will be figuring out an easy way to keep track of all of that.

Finished the Creation sheet. Finally. Working on splitting the information gathered there into a few different permanent sheets. Then, those sheets will be expanded upon for long term use by the player and game master both.

Had to reformat HOW the information was pulled, but it will make future programming (and future updates) much easier, both for myself and for the users. :D

There are only two usable pages left to be made for this project. There are still Validation sheets to be made, and pulling information between sheets as well, but all in all it is coming along nicely.

The next project will be the Group Tracker, which will include 5 individual Dice Roller programs, and some base layouts for star ships and such. That one will be built as it is used, as there is already a usable version of it made. It is an extremely rough one.... We will call it Version 0.5. Haha

Anyways, I should note that this Character Sheet is made with PbP game play in mind. It isn't the most suited for proper table top, but due to WHERE it is being made (That being, Google Drive) it is ideal for multiple people to have open and be able to view simultaneously.

So, yeah. It has a niche. :3

Hey there. I'm probably doing something wrong, but I'm unable to edit or test the sheet as it's set to view only. I tried copying it to my drive, but no luck.

Are you wanting to keep it that way, or would you like for others to be trying it out?

I was testing it with my brother just fine. You should have been able to make a copy and edit everything, though the spots that SHOULD be edited are kind of obvious. Lol

I don't have all sheets password protected, so, honestly, I would say there is a step you are missing. I just tried it with a different log in and was able to do it just fine. File: Make a Copy. Then it is free reign.

Welp. There it is. It's possible that I was trying on my phone, which is never a good idea.

Thanks for the resource!

Lol, I love the idea of accessibility, but the phone app is crippled.

It should be complete here soon.

So, I have recently discovered why something like this doesn't already exist.

There are far too many variables at play for such a simple program like Excel to be capable of handling it without stretching pages out so far that it completely defeats the purpose.

I would have loved to be able to pull this off, but there just isn't enough flexibility in GoogleSheets capabilities.

So, I had to scrap several bits that I wanted to do. This bumps the release date up significantly (possibly by the end of the weekend) but also removes a lot of what I had wanted to include.

If Google ever creates a share able flexible program builder (like a knock off of Visual Basic?) I could come back to this and make it do EXACTLY what I wanted it to do.

I don't see that happening.

So, expect this to be completed by either end of day Sunday or pretty early on Monday.

Not sure why you even bothered when others have already done it better than you could have hoped to

You have added absolutely nothing to this thread or my project in any way.

This thread would not be at all less without that post.

Do you at least feel better about yourself?

I'm not sure what the point of a post like this is, other then to stoke the posters ego or make them feel good bringing somebody down while hiding behind the mask of anonymity.

Anyway, sorry you can't do everything you like on this. Google apps can be frustratingly limiting. That said, things are interesting so far. Thanks for all your hard work.

Thank you.

I have no issue with criticism. In fact, if I am wrong, tell me. There is nothing I love more than being wrong because it opens my mind a bit and forces me to find the right answer.

Dude, seriously - what the hell. Don't be a **** or shut the hell up.

Updated first post. Couldn't make this one do exactly as I wanted it to, so I decided to try a new approach.

New work in progress.

I'm eager to see how it goes. :)
