Medicine checks per encounter

By Krieger22, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

The rulebook states (if I recall correctly) that any one character can only receive one Medicine check per encounter to regain wounds. Now, my question is: should this be taken to mean only one check, succeed or fail, or one successful check? And if the phrasing is ambiguous (I'm AFB at the moment) how would you rule?

Personally I would say after one check, successful or not, that everything which can be done at the moment has been done and some time would need to pass before anything more could be reasonably attempted.

Yeah, I agree with this.

Yep, read as written. Successful or not, the check was made.

Yes, it's 1 check, not 1 successful check.

Here's something that came up in my game yesterday, somewhat on topic...after a slugfest with some Gamorreans, one player was at his max strain threshold, with 2 crits against him. So would one person get to make 3 Medicine checks for this player at one time? The way I read the rules was that each player was allowed to have one Medicine check per critical injury per week, and the one per encounter to try and heal. He wouldn't get another medicine check for his remaining crit until the following week (1 was successful, one was not).

Speaking of his 2 crits, he suffered them when one of the Gamorreans rolled 2 triumphs in one attack. Can I give out 2 crits like that in one attack? Thanks for any input!

No, he can't take two crits from one attack. A situation like you describe would mean one crit with a +10 to the roll.

As for your first question, I'd say that he could get three rolls (in three different rounds, not at the same time). One to heal wounds, and one for each critical.

How about this, one of my players used a stim pack after being wounded in an encounter. He was wounded again in the same encounter and another player gave him a stim. Is this allowed. I considered a fresh wound means the option to fresh medicine, right?

Yeah, you can use as many stims as you want as often as you want (though after a few itll be mostly for show rather then effect).

Using a stim is not the same as performing medical care using the Medicine skill.

Except as the rules point out, you can only heal one Crit per week unless you use something like a Bacta tank. I'm AFB right now but I'm pretty sure that's the case.

That said, this thread made me realize I had been completely neglecting to track PC's crits past the fights they had gotten them from, so they've been getting away very lightly so far. Next session should be interesting!

I'm AFB too, but I was under the impression that it was one Medicine check per critical injury per week, not one per character (regardless of number of criticals) per week.

I read it as one check per crit per week.

Can you benefit from more than one stim per day? These are drugs you know. In warhammer 3, you can only benefit from every different source of healing once a day. That sounded Nice.

About critical, i would say once à week AND out of encounter mode. It is a hard wound that need time (even Rambo in the forest cure his criticals between encounters... With a knife and bullet powder :)

In our game nobody liked stim packs by raw. We said it´s like an energizer instead, curing strain.

Sure, you can have multiple stims per day. They just lose efficiency; 5 wounds healed for the first, 4 for the second, 3 for the third, and so on.

Making stimpacks heal strain is a little tricky, in my view. You can already recover strain by spending Advantage, as well as the Inspiring Rethoric talent and Advantage on a Medicine check. Strain is meant to be a fairly limited resource that can be used for many different things but must be managed carefully. Letting characters regain strain in too many different ways could quickly lead to spamming of some powerful combat talents that in RAW are balanced by the strain mechanic.
