Since it was Halloween this week, I ran a session using the movie Event Horizon as a basis. The idea was that the Empire had been testing an experimental hyper drive that was supplemented by the dark side. Of course, as per the movie things went horribly wrong. The ship ended up "stuck" in something similar to hyperspace, Dr. Weir, the engineer of the hyperdrive, eventually went completely mad.
Over time the ship & the Dr started to become linked as per the movie. Eventually the ship/Dr found ways to capture ships in hyperspace. He would then toy with the crew of said ships and feed to their fear. Our intrepid hero find themselves as the next meal. Rooms in the ship appear/disappear, or just flat out relocate themselves, they fought various zombies, and even had to face off vs the Dr a few times.
All said and done it was a good time. But, as EotE is apt to do, the dice have thrust upon me a interesting opportunity. Our Bothan slicer was toying around in the computer systems. He took some time retrieving history on the ship, and getting a grip on exactly was going on. This is where the dice decided to gift me some fun. The Bothan, being the greedy info-junkie he is, decided to attempt to download the prototype hyperdrive schematics. The dice roll, and he easily make the check. But, there it is, in all it's glory a despair.
Having downloaded, and taken a quick glance at the hyperdrive schematics he is now obsessed. It has replaced his character motivation for now, and he has been touched by the dark side in some way. I haven't exactly determined how I'll work all this into the game in the long term, but I have some interesting possibilities.
Has a dark force spirit touched him, and attempting to posses him? What exactly is special about this hyperdrive design? Why is he obsessed with the hyperdrive? One single despair roll, at just a critical moment and the characters future is clouded by the dark side.
