An Opinion on Black Crusade With Only War

By venkelos, in Only War

Overall, how well do things carry over from Black Crusade to Only War? I ask because I have a certain near-fetish with Inquisitors, and one of my favorite statted characters in all the 40K lines is Inquisitor Victoria Aldrich (BC, p.367-368). I VERY much like the idea of, at least at some point, having an Inquisitor come into a base, do their "in the name of Him on Holy Terra, I..." and requisitioning some soldiers, and having them go off and do a mission or two. In some ways, I can see a small group of Guardsmen as almost more appropriate under the Inquisitor, than being six guys, or six guys among a horde of NPCs, fighting another horde of enemy NPCs; some Inquisitor missions seem more like a small, specialist team thing. Whether I use Aldrich, or a knock off with a different name, her Talents are a problem. Viki has several nice Talents, that in BC would affect a whole group of players, but their OW equivalent (I believe all do carry over, at least) ONLY affects those half-men pawns (Comrades) that OW players drag around.

While this isn't a great place to vent about how I don't particularly like Comrades, how would you rule on her Talents? She is a powerful individual. Would you say that her Talents still affect the players, as they do in her book, or just have her augment their pawns (she has no Comrade, so none to boost herself)? Since she is an Inquisitor, and requisitioned them like a new gun, one might rule that SHE does treat PCs like Comrades (they do her will), but I'm otherwise not too sure.

Hail!!! =][= Hail!!!

As far as I'm concerned, use the rules in Black Crusade - she is a Black Crusade character and her skills and stats have been designed with this in mind.

The Comrades rules are just a shorthand to make up for the fact that only a masochist wants to run a 10-person RPG group; when dealing with non-only war situations, expand the scope of relevant talents as much as you see fit.

Just use the Black Crusade rules. It's by far the least messy solution.

I would suggest simply rewriting the Only War stuff to not only apply to Comrades (because Comrades are terrible and ill-defined), but that might take a lot more work than you're willing to put in.

Just pull it from Black Crusade. She's an NPC, so go wild. Whatever you say, goes. Nobody is going to double-check if she has the appropriate talents or what they do.

Assuming that there are Inquisitors in the area of the Spinward Front (if they are hiding amongst the Koronus Expanse, they almost HAVE to be looking for Heretics and Xenos in the Margin Crusade), has anyone actually used one positively in their games? On the one hand, I can see them as being a nice excuse to have a full on Leader unit, comparable to a General, with your Grunts, and they could be the single best excuse to get some really cheesy gear that "regular" Guardsmen might not get to be considered for use, but aside from those nice, twinky thoughts, they could also be really cool characters, and fun founts of knowledge and instruction for the players, should they choose to use it. Not sure if he or she would just HAVE to outstrip players in some combat, social, and gear situations, depending on their specialties, or wait back while the players do the grunt work (one hell of a powerful protection to leave in the Chimera; that'll still be where you parked it :P ), but I do see some awesome opportunities, if they don't suffer too much from "overshining NPC" syndrome.

So, has an Inquisitor taken to the field in anyone else's games, in a way they care to share?
