Unlikely but fun race/career combinations, what have you got?

By splad, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Often their is typical or archetype. The Brash Pilot/Jedi Human. The Wookiee Bounty hunter etc. etc. Sometimes I have to stifle a yawn when their is a lack of creative influx into characters. It is fun for a gm to have something surprising, unusual or even outlandish pc to bounce situations off.

I had a player with a sneaky Rodian Jedi. Very self centered but you could see the internal struggle for them to do good. Yes it does often require a good and inventive player to make it work, I would be interested in hearing your stories.

Some ideas I have had bounced around was a Ewok Smuggler, brought up on nar shadaa with a big gruff voice and habitually smoking a cigar.

A gamorrean doctor, with a very upper class british type accent. He often plays into peoples stereotypes as a cover.

So what have you guys/gals experienced?

Actually, a wookiee bounty hunter would- according to canon! - be a real oddity, as it states they dislike hunting other sentients for credits...

I should also add that a standard combination doesn't necessarily have to be yawn-stifling... A good player can turn a walking cliché into a classic archetype. Or subvert the trope to be something new and interesting.

We have a droid mechanic, which isn't that unusual... apart from the fact she's a former pleasure model who thinks she's human, and speaks in rather erotic terms when she's modding blasters and repairing ships... or translating for the non-human characters.

We also have a human bounty hunter, who seems at first glance to be a total 'tough girl' cliché... but she's actually a failed jedi candidate who thinks she's possessed by demons, and has constructed an entire false persona around her new identity, and is afraid to use her Force powers....

My very first ever Star Wars character was a Bothan soldier, a straight-forward commando-style, battle-savvy tactician with little interpersonal skills and utter dislike of stealth, guile, and political maneuverings.

I was considering a Bothan commando for an AoR game if I get to play :) We'll see how that goes.

My players are always fond of messing with my head. One of them is a Dashade Doctor with HORRIBLE bedside manner. Hilarity has been ensuing.

One of the few times I played in Star Wars, I played a Duros Soldier/Technician who has next to no piloting capability.

Of course, I don't think anything will make me laugh any harder than Mr. Houtini, the Jawa Jedi Counsular. . .

Yes of course its always always the player that bring them to life, from the dynamic to the hilarious. I had one D6 group in Tales of the Jedi that lasted 5 years of virtually every once a week meets. Some of the best characters brought to life. I do enjoy some good acting:)

A Bothan Assassin Bounty Hunter who works for Spynet making problems go away. Also another idea would be a Trandoshan Politico.

I'm working on an Ithorian Commando (AoR careers allowed in an EotE game).

Also my friend is playing a Trandoshan Politico! It's hilarious

In the Edge game I'm running, one of the PCs is a Bothan bounty hunter. He has the Family Obligation to reflect the fact that he's sort of the black sheep of the family for not exactly following the Bothan Way in the way the rest of their society really intends it.

Also, in the module I wrote up for the Order 66 Kickstarter, one of the pre-gen PCs is a Trandoshan doctor. He was fun to write up!

Long before Thane Krios in mass effect, I wanted to play a caamasi assassin that remembers every single hit he has performed.

Gungan mercenary soldier :)

Gungan mercenary soldier :)

I'd actually love to play a Gungan politico, a real heavyweight character that makes people sit up straight when he enters the room. The sort of guy Morgan Freeman might play. And yes, I'd deliver all the 'wesas' and 'exsqueeze-mes' with just as much gravity. :D

So does he often insult people or is it just the so bounty hunter oh crap you're a politician comments from PCs?

But can you do Morgan Freeman's voice at the same time? ;)

Gamorrean Scholar aka "unexpected this is, and unfortunate"

Chadra-Fan Marauder aka "My axe weighs as much as I do"

Chevin Politico aka "kill with kindness bad breath"

Ortolan Doctor aka "Operate on me with them chubby fingers"

This is exactly what I created as a character in my most recent RP...

He's actually quite polite, which is frequently even scarier for NPCs, really throws them off. Ssorku is a big, well-spoken member of a race whose naming conventions revolve around grisly killing, after all. Doesn't help that when things go south he's prone to poking people over (Pressure Point) and then continuing negotiations, still quite politely.

IN 2 campaigns i am in I am playing a Chiss Bounty hunter one as a gadgeteer and police style bounty hunter.

In my campaigns, it's not so much odd race/career combinations as it is career choices and character attitudes.

In my first group, the Human Colonist (Scholar, Force Sensitive Exile) has been MVP of our most recent firefights, running out in the open to rescue supposedly more competent characters like our Droid Bounty Hunter (Assassin). He even intentionally took an incapacitating blaster bolt meant for the droid. The Human Smuggler (Scoundrel) has stayed true to form though, stealing everything from a Jawa Juice still to a Gallofree Transport.

In the second group, the Twi'lek Colonist (Doctor) is actually a gang hitwoman on the run, and the ex-scout trooper Human Bounty Hunter (Survivalist) is the official "face" of the party. The Droid Hired Gun (Marauder) has never hit anyone more than once*, while the Bothan Smuggler (Thief) somehow gets mistaken for law enforcement.

*This is because he has talents and modded Vibro-Axe that need 1 Advantage to trigger a Critical Injury, and add +50 to the roll.

I can't say I have a truly random character but I do have a very fun Twi'lek Outlaw Tech.

He was a former fence for a Hutt who was scavenging important components from items to use for his own tinkering devices or selling them separately to make some profits off the books.

He is terrible in a fight and when he isn't doing repairs during space combat he tries to stay away from the guns* but he is always looking to improvise with anything he can see or with his Utility Belt talent and is becoming very good with Computers and Mechanics.

No Mandalorian Bounty Hunter here :P

* In our first session he accidentally shot a space refueling station into the atmosphere while the Doctor and Assassin where still on it. They escaped in an escape pod... Just!

We have a Human marauder, Wookie Doctor and Twi'lek Mercenary Soldier.

Gamorean slicer

We are playing very cannon and stereotype, and it is great. We have so little face skills that we make our own issues. That is what you get with a Duro Pilot, 2 Rodian Hired Guns, and a Human Slicer.
