HeroQuest

By Ragnar1981, in Talisman

Ok, not immediatly Talisman related, but I didn't know where to post it.

Anyway, now that FFG has released a new version of a classic Games Workshop game, what would you guys think if they were to release another classic game bij GW and MB, HeroQuest

I would absolutely love it. I think it would be a commercial succes if you look at its popularity on the internet. On the other hand, they already have Descent. What do you guys think?

Well Heroquest was a great game and might bridge the gap between Talisman-esque games and Descent-esque. But not having played Descent, I don't know how complicated it is. If it is only slightly more complicated than HQ, then I think you have your answer :D

Component-wise, wasn't HQ a bit less... bulky the Descent? I'm thinking price here... but I don't remember it well as I only played it a couple times.

Yeah there's a lot less in the original boxed game than Descent, but than again, it's a simpler game and easier to get into. That's maybe why it's still so appealing. It's quick to play and the setting is great. More interesting than Descent imo

Oh wow, I can't believe someone else was thinking the same thing....

I *love* HeroQuest! I've been looking for something just like it forver, but I would gladly take a reissue as well! The thing that was so much fun about HeroQuest was how everything carried over between games. The plot, the exp, the weapons and armor.... I'm getting all nostalgic just thinking of it!

It is a strong off-topic but would you believe I was thinking of a FFG HeroQuest re-issue just today?

I would really like a HeroQuest re-issue, even though I own every single piece of the game, a part in Italian (base set and expansion up to Wizards of Morcar) and a part in American issue (The Barbarian & Elf quest packs + 1 extra base set); I wish I could see a Dwarf and Mage Quest Pack see the light.

But I don't think this will happen. FFG publishes Descent, which is a wonderful piece of dungeon delving boardgame, which lacks Heroquest flexibility (I made out hundreds of quests from the same board arrangement, each one very different and thematic) but adds more competition with the master (Overlord) and players (Heroes). Descent is well done, artistically excellent, fun to play with and it sells well; I don't know if FFG would consider re-issuing a product that might disturb Descent sales. By the way, Heroquest was a game that didn't need many official expansions; the best feature was bulding your own Quests with ease. It also had a problem; it required continuous playing and occasional games were not as satisfying as a campaign. In Descent you may play a single quest, enjoy it for some hours, have winners and losers and the option to pack everything and start from scratch next time.

Talisman was a long awaited re-issue and I believe they did a good job taking over the work of Black Industries and trying to give it a fresh look. I do expect a long series of expansions for Talisman, as much as FFG did for Runebound (which was born as an alternative to Talisman, but it's a completely different game system).

It's certainly a good point about competing products... still, Descent is a bit too pricey for my tastes. I suppose if I ever run into someone who has it, I'll have to give it a try, considering I did like an isolated game of Heroquest (or even the simpler DungeonQuest) from time to time.

I have play heroquest so many times in my younger days.

But now, i am not playing it anymore.

It would be nice if they made it again, but also a little more advance. The problem with heroquest is, that you are always on the same board.

Maybe that FFG can make a lot of quests for a board in the style of advance heroquest. And more weapons and items etc, so that it keeps interesting.

And a return of all the quests books.

You're speaking of Descent, then. Except for the monsters, which are FFG copyrighted and not GW, Descent is a big evolution of Advanced Hero Quest. A map made of tiles, doors rooms and corridors, that you can assemble in infinite ways. And a lot more weapons and items, a lot of quests, a lot of Heroes to choose from, a lot of Special Abilities, a lot of Monsters to face.

I wish I would have played Heroquest a little more in the past, now there's little chance to do it. As I said, the best feature of HQ was the board and how it was constructed. It was amazing and I assure that you can make really nice quests combining that base template of rooms and tiles from the expansions. If you make tiles from yourself, you may give your maps an even fresher look.

But here's the point. HQ can be custom expanded; Descent is difficult to expand the same way, because it's hard to make that kind of tiles!

For me, the barrier to Descent is I don't want to start from scratch each time. I want a campaign that carries over from game to game. Like I think Descent looks amazing, but the idea of one winner and starting from scratch each time - I get that from a lot of games.

Until I can find a replica of the old HeroQuest system, I'm going to continue trying to fashion something out of D&D. The 4e rules actually lend themselves quite well to a HeroQuest system. But wow, nothing would replace the fun of having a campaign based dungeon crawler all in one box!

Just to make it clear: with Descent you may play several quests one after the other, with a common background and storyline. If you have Road to Legend Expansion, your gaming options become even wider, with the chance of playing a big campaign between dungeons and the land of Terrinoth. Don't underestimate Descent, it's a wonderful game with many amazing features.

The problem I tried to point out with Heroquest is that you need to play quests as a campaign, keeping your Hero for a while and improving him. Descent allows you the same, but can easily be turned into a one-shot, with losers and winners; you gain more Gold in Descent, you spend it while the adventure is going on (travelling back to City) and you find many useful Objects because monsters are pretty fierce and strong, even in short numbers. And the Overlord has many ways to make things difficult for Heroes. The role of Morcar/Zargon in Heroquest was not that active, even though I liked it.

I wouldn't mind seeing a reissue of HeroQuest, but I don't think it will happen to be honest. Nothing to do with Descent, but FFG's deal with GW only pertains to their "non-miniature" based games. As I recall, HQ became Advanced HQ, which became Warhammer Quest, which became Warhammer Fantasy - one of GW's two big "miniatures" lines and thus probably not the sort of thing FFG has license to recreate.
