ion cannon/ ship prediction and bombs

Had a crazy idea today to control my opponents movement in order to make bombs more effective.

The idea was to ion as many as possible so that I knew when to drop bombs optimally.

I haven't fojnd an effective way yet but to throw it out there, this was my best rhought on the way to work.

Honestly, I don't think it'll be as difficult to employ as one might expect.. the trick is timing. you'll have to be more or less up the enemy's nose when you drop, but that's pretty much de rigeur for bomb drops, anyhow. The range 1 blast radius for bombs gives you a pretty wide margin for error, and most enemies will want you in their forward aspect at all times, on the whole. The real trick is timing the ion hit, with a bomber being in position to drop his charge close enough for the short 1 ahead move to reach the blast zone.

I was running a similar squad just the other day.

I found that if I ion cannoned someone, it was more important to move into attack range on the target, or out of his firing arcs to focus another target.

Intelligence agent did make deploying bombs on those high PS ships a lot easier. You could waste them pretty easily if you don't know for sure where the enemy is going.

Obviously now we have tie bombers its on everones minds to load up on bombs.

It's just that the people I play seem to have got better at remembering the bombs and at predicting the drop and flying accodingly.

I agree though if you can get nose to nose almost no ship can avoid a bomb.

I think only a five forward or using a boost after another move will do it.

I like it. I've also found proxy mines to be excellent against high PS pilots when you're a 2. You can just turn hard in front of them and drop it right in their path

I still haven't tried a bomb list yet, but I think the best way to use them is simply to have a high skill. I'm just not a fan of the ion cannon. You don't get any more dice, You don't get a better firing arc. You cannot do amy more than one damage (no crits), and you get the ion effect. Serously I think this should be a 1 point upgrade.

Ion cannons are priced right. They are way more valuable than this forum and BGG give them credit for. I win tournaments with a simple y-wing with an ion turret.

I think I'd prefer a Shuttle with the Ion Cannon and Int agent, adding Saboteur.

Drop one when you predict the enemy formation will K-turn.

They will either fly right on top of it or they will be sneaky and turn, in which case you get free shots anyway.

Not completely off topic, but what I prefer to do is throw a proton bomb on a bomber with a high piloting skill and simply await for ships to gather in my wake. As you only need to declare the bomb when you reveal your dial, you should already have a ship or two in range, no guessing required.

That's why it costs less.... B-Wing + FCS + Ion Cannon is awesome though.

I considered this but wanted a little bwtter firepower and manwuverability after bombs spent.

Also krassis helps ensure the ion connects.
