BBS == Bulletin Board System .

It was the way we communicated back when the Internet backbone was provided by ArpaNet and was largely restricted to military and educational institutions. Many sites on the network were actually connected via dial-up modems and the UUCP (Unix-to-Unix-Copy) protocol, and the best that BBSes could generally do to talk to each other was something called FidoNet.

I was an early customer for the folks at Heller Information Systems, who ran one of the largest TBBS nodes in the world. They later actually got onto the Internet, and grabbed the domain names his.com and hers.com , among others. To this day, they continue to provide hosting for my personal vanity domain shub-internet.org .

YMMV is pretty old, but I’m having trouble finding a good source for the etymology of this initialism. I know it is in the Jargon File , but regretfully Eric doesn’t provide as much history for this entry as he normally does. ;(

In my day, our movies were just called things like 'Star Wars'.... and we liked it!

None of this 'Episode This' and 'Prequel That' nonsense...

Bah, kids today with their 'I-phones' don't know they're born...

:)

Had this last night. Just started running the F&D beta adventure and the conversation went like this.

Player: when is this set

Me: just before the first movie

Player: So the empire does not exist yet

Me yes order 66 when Palpatine killed all the Jedi was 19 years ago.

Player: but you said the first movie.

Me: yes the one that was released FIRST!. For future reference if I'm talking about episodes 1-3 I will qualify with prequels.

Blooming whippersnapers

Thanjs for the info about BBS. I thought hat was a typo!

Haley is young and trendy and so uses all this modern, 'internet' language!

We oldies can't keep up! :)

In my day, etc etc...

You're only 45. That's not old!
