While we're waiting for DH2...

By Adeptus-B, in Dark Heresy

... how about a quickie DH1 supplement, FFG , to appease us players with active campaigns?

I realize it would be a massive waste of money to commission work on a totally-new DH1 product, but, it occurs to me that Only War was initially commissioned- and announced- as a DH supplement. It must have gone a ways down that path before it was decided to re-purpose it as a stand-alone game, which means that there is some OW stuff originally written for DH sitting around somewhere collecting dust. I'm guessing that the Specialties and Regiments in OW began life as Alternate Ranks and Background Packages for DH , right? So, while us DH fans are waiting patiently for movement on DH2 , with nothing new since The Lathes Worlds (how long ago was that ?) to tide us over, how about throwing us a bone and compile a .pdf of some of the early DH-oriented OW stuff...?

not likely ....

not likely ....

You're probably right, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good idea. Two FFG staffers (one editor, one graphic designer) spending a day or two de-archiving the early Only War files and compositing some of them into a .pdf, in exchange for increased brand loyalty from fans who have waited months since the last new product, and will have to wait months more for the next official release, seems like money well spent to me.

It might not be so easy to produce a quality product out of whatever scraps didn't make it into OW as it is now. I'd rather not get a soulless hackjob of a supplement, and I don't think FFG is interested in producing one either.

Since OW was originally started as a DH supplement, I don't think it would have to be OW 'scraps', just some of the original content (Alternate Ranks, new equipment, etc) as written for DH . Already bought-and-paid-for by FFG, and going unused.

Not bloody likely. DH 1ed is done. Now its just a matter of getting 2ed done and released.

TBH, DH 1ed is pretty solid and the existing source material covers most of what needed to be covered, while leaving room for players and GM'd to fill the holes, creatively.

-Which entails a wait of several months, on the heels of the several months since the last new DH product. Not a good business strategy for a product that relies heavily on 'brand loyalty'...

Not going to happen. Retailers are already being told there will be no restocks aside from what distributors have on hand for the DH1 line.

I'm not talking about a retail product for store shelves, I'm talking about a web freebe to reward the patience of their customer base.

It would be the smart thing to do honestly (like the Lost Data Slate for the Lathe Worlds) but I'll be honest it's unlikely it will happen one way or another.

Why? Kind of because as others have pointed out, DH1 is dead and done. Technically, FFG was working on someone else's system rather than their own, and they might not have been happy with that or the idea that they have to abide by another ruleset that they didn't create themselves.

Another reason is because it IS the smart thing to do, and because it is the smart thing to do, it's unlikely it will happen. In my experience, companies will rarely ever do the smart thing unless it affects their bottom line, and in this case it doesn't, and chances are it won't.

Why release stuff all bought and paid for now when it can be shoehorned into the next edition and appear all new and awesome rather than reworked and rehashed?

I find it very curious that in your mind a smart business decision and a decision that positively affects their bottom line are separate things.

BAhahahahaha! Not gonna happen, dude.

That's what I referred to as "scraps". I don't exactly know at which point in the development was it converted into a separate game, but it's just as likely whatever they could put into such a supplement never got playtested, or seriously edited, and would require pretty much the whole development process for a supplement to start all over again before it gets anywhere near being publication-worthy.
