Possible wave 4+ ships: TIE-Aggressor

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

I know there has been a lot discussions about the thips to come in wave 3 and afterwards ...

I made these cards some time ago (actually before wave 3 was known), which i want so share.

The TIE-Aggressor first saw action in SWG:JTL. Its role is a light (torpedo-)bomber with the ability to survive even without fighter escort.

Maybe i should have given him a hull value of 4. Nevertheless, here are the cards so far:

I think it is better to just give it a rear auxiliary arc, like the Firespray. Would be an interesting combo on a small ship.

Work on your wording: both upgrades are very awkwardly phrased.

"Turret Gunner" can only work on this ship, which greatly reduces the value of the card. I'd change it to
--After taking damage in an attack, you may immediately make a secondary weapon attack against the ship that damaged you, if possible.--

Twin Rear Laser Cannon (I'm not a fan of the name, either.) could easily be fixed to
-- Attack: Attack 1 ship (only outside of your firing arc).--
to match the typical turret wording.

Yeah I would just give it a rear arc. Far easier.

At 20pts you would have a little less than 1/2 a firespray. Interesting certainly.

Fragile enough not to be too scary. Cheap enough for 4 HCLs + upgrades. I don't know how I feel about that.

Firing arcs are one of the really cool ways to differentiate a lot of ships that are the same. I'd like to see a few ships with larger firing arcs (don't go overboard on 360s). A small ship with a rear arc would be very cool and a large ship with 2 smaller arcs would also be kinda fun.

A small ship with a rear gun would be cool in X-Wing - thats just what I thought.

So of course you can just go with a rear arc. But then with a gunner crew, the gunner could use the forward arc for its turret as well. I wanted to create a 'real' rear laser cannon, not just a secondary fire arc.

This was more or less what I thought we will get with the lambda shuttle - now we got the APL upgrade card.

And again, a hull value of 4 would be more adequate. Maybe a system upgrade slot.

And of course - this would be the one and only possibility for the empire to field ion cannon turrets ;)

Any additional thoughts on the TIE Aggressor? (yey I love its name)

I feel like all the ships I really wanted to see in a Star Wars-fighter-dogfighitng-game are complete. I am not really interested in more and more powerful ships. Ships of vastly different power levels have much more of a place in a computer game or a role-playing game than they do in a tactical dogfighting game. I like that every ship is good (and bad) in its own way. (okay I don't really see any down side to the X-wing, but that's okay)

So if there are going to be more ships I haev to ask myself what do I want to see. I want to use these ships in my Star Wars Role Playing games. Maybe find a way to work an x-wing game inside my role playing game. To do that I am going to want more ships that would show up in that areana. I would like Z-95s, Skipray Blastboats. I would love to see more light freighters, shuttles and system patrol ships.

I don't really care for power creap in my tactical wargames.

Much as I like this ship, I highly doubt it will appear in Wave 4 because FFG seems to favor older designs. For Wave 3's EU ship, they could have gone with the Nova Courier. Instead they went with the Moldy Crow, which has been around since 1997. I'm thinking the next wave will all be ships from around that decade.

At the very least I think FFG is going to aim for more distinct and recognizable ships. The Aggressor suffers from coming from a semi-obscure source (not many people got very far into SW:Galaxies' expansions) and looking way too much like a TIE Advanced. Until specified I thought it was one of the TIE prototypes featured in the X-wing Alliance campaign.

I like the concept and the stats in the context of making a TIE Aggressor itself, although as mentioned in many other threads most people's bets are on a TIE Defender and/or the Skipray Blastboat for the Empire. Still, nice work on the Aggressor cards.

Yeah they want to be safe and do ships that more people will know and buy.

I agree with them, it is the smart way to go.

I wouldn't be so certain. FFG has shown a propensity for mining the most obscure sources. As much as I love the Moldy Crow, it is rather obscure to some of the other options available. We will see the more well known EU ships, but I bet FFG will throw a few curves.

Turret gunner would have to be at least worth 10 points. Anything that gives an extra attack is beyond broken for 2 points. $ Y-wings with ion cannon for the win. That would be way too easy to do.

I like the concept and your cards but I don't think it should be as maneuverable as a TIE fighter. So maybe 2 Agility and the evade action to make it a bit better than the TIE Bomber. Also a Hull of 4 would be useful. The Turret gunner is a good idea as it is specific to this ship so should have the clause "TIE Aggressor only".

For what it's worth, this was The Empire's most underused craft in SWG. It handled like a turd and wasn't too tough. That and the TIE Oppressor wasn't a favorite either, and they were essentially the same vessel.

The TIE Oppressor had no rear laser cannons ... so it wasnt the same vessel :P

I was with the hutts back these days and i loved to fly a Rihkxyrk Attack Ship

At the end SWG was the most underused MMORPG with epic background... but thats a different story ;)

It's no reason why the TIE Aggressor shouldnt be a part of the X-Wing miniatures game, since its non of the TIE uglies and it has special features, thus potential.

I'd go with 2/2/4/0 with torpedoes only, and a 180° firing arc in the rear. This would almost give it a 360° firing arc, but still have blind spots. It would not be limited in range like the turrets, though.

I just mean with the general shape and control, whatnot.

I've never flown the TIE Oppressor - but it came after the TIE Defender. Shouldn't it be very elite then? At least far better then the Aggressor ... ?

Tataa!

What type of upgrade slots would fit the Aggressor for its role is a 'light bomber'?

I like to update the cards you see in post #1.

Option 0:

turret, torpedo, crew

Option 1:

turret, missile, crew

Option 2:

turret, torpedo, missile

Option 3:

turret, torpedo, torpedo

Option 4:

turret, missile, missile

Option 5:

turret, torpedo, bomb

Option 6:

turret, missile, bomb

Option 7:

None of them, but ...

Wait... wasn't Scythe Squadron the TIE/Ln (Fighter) squad from the Death Star II?

Anyway, I kinda like the abilities of the ship, I just hate the design. They'll be fun to kill.

I really don't know. Was there a Tempest or Storm Squadron? ... I just took names that could fit in as placeholders. Better than Squadron A and B. Of course Death Squadron was Darth Vader's task force, so that is to be replaced as well.

I really like the Aggressors' design - its basically the Advanced with cut wings and a cute aft laser turret :)

... you forgot to provide me an option for its upgrades btw ... -_-
