Creating Adversaries

By Proofs, in Game Masters

I was just wondering what kind of process everyone goes through when creating your minions, rivals, and nemisisesssss. Do you base them off of the pre-made ones in the Core Rules, or do you build them like a player character, then adjust numbers, skills, and talents as you go? I've kind of been doing a little of both, but was just wondering what the community does. Thanks!

I create major NPCs using the PC-creation system, and try to think through them as if they really were PCs. That means, once the players encounter them during the campaign, they already have a bit of flavor and backstory.

That said, sometimes I'll have have a random mook do something extreme if the players are having too easy a time. If they live (pretty rare), they'll almost certainly become a recurring NPC. The look on players' faces when Redshirt #5 decides to man up is worth its weight in gold. When s/he comes back two sessions later after being statted up to Rival or Adversary level, the reaction is priceless.

Yeah, I already have some characters that are going to come back to haunt the group. I love taking some low level thug and then slowly turning him into a force of nature than could strike from anywhere.

I'm lazy. Not just in EotE, but other games I run, I usually find a prewritten stat block of something close to what my NPC will be like, make minor tweaks when needed, and throw a new skin on it.

Hmm... These armored thugs are almost identical to what my nefarious group of battle droids should be like. Let me draw some spark dots on and color in some LEDs on the picture. Viola!

tried that

during the second appearance of an enemy NPC he met the fate of a very long fall down a shaft after being incapacitated.

so I am having to start from scratch and create a antagonist group to counter the PC group

Your group downed a nemesis and threw him into a Starwars no-handrails pit? Remember all nemesis should have adversary two which upgrades all attacks against them by 2...so a normal medium range blaster shot actually becomes to red dice.

Typically you should have an escape plan for your villain until you plan a final battle.

I'm finishing up Escape From Mos Schuuta with my group tomorrow, and after that I'll be starting them on my own campaign. I'm planning on having the beginner's box characters come back as Nemeses later, that should lead to some interesting encounters.

Neat idea. Be wary, I've had characters fight old characters before. It can potentially be a point an issue if they were invested in those characters.

If you check my signature you can download a simple editable pdf with room for four NPCs per page. For creating creature cards like wfrp sort of.
