Early Imperial Aces analysis

By HERO, in X-Wing

Hiya fellas,

Just fyi, I started covering X-Wing on my gaming blog and I invite you all to check it out. As an experienced minis gamer, this game seemed perfect for what I want to play these days.

Anyways, I tested an Imperial Aces list last night in a friendly game. The list had Carnor Jax, Soontir Fel and Turr Phennir. I wrote up the post-game analysis here:

After the game, I changed up my list some and ended up with this one right here:

I wanted to see if any of you have tried out the Imperial Aces yet, or if you have any feedback for me, that would be great. I'm really looking forward to making some Interceptors work!

Nice report. Isn't it great that in theory we all can run these "Imperial Aces" squads pretty much now as most of the relevant information and card details are known. The cool thing is I am still happy to pay for the expansions because they are "worth it" when they are released. Kudos to FFG for their marketing genius!

Aren't their still 2 mystery named pilots as well? If so, they also give you some day1 surprise when you unbox it.

Nice blog, I've bookmarked it :)

Your review and other thoughts closely match up mine, the whole "easy to learn, a lifetime to master" feeling behind X-Wing really shows just how good this game really is. When you watch the video tutoral you see it's not a complex game... But once you start playing you release just how trully deep it really is.

Also like you, I really apprecate the lack of the "you move, shoot, assault, kill off my stuff. Then I move, shoot, assault" system that 40k has. X-Wing on the other hand feels almost real time in comparison.

I love interceptors but just can't ever get a 3 interceptor list to produce like it should. They are a hard counter to some things but ion's just hose them.

I bought 2 kits myself :) It's fun to brainstorm and see what the future has to offer for sure.

I think going forward I will be playing at least 12 hull points in all my lists, meaning 2x Tie Interceptors and 2x Tie Fighters. With that said, my current list runs the following:

100 points
Soontir Fel
Push the Limit
Stealth Device
Targeting Computer
Royal Guard TIE
Turr Phennir
Veteran Instincts
Stealth Device
Targeting Computer
Royal Guard TIE
"Mauler Mithel"
Veteran Instincts
"Backstabber"

I can't wait to see what the other 2 unique pilots are. I'm hoping for a high-ranked 181st Saber pilot and an non-elite unique like Kir Kanos.

Firstly, I'd like to say that the imperial propoganda posters were classic!

I like the blog report and have it bookmarked for later. I'm really interested in seeing what the other pilots are coming with the ace expansion. I'm not an experianced empire player but it seems to me you have to many points on fel / turr . I might go more el cheapo trying to make an all interceptor list.

4 alpha's run at 72 points. That leaves a hefty 28pts left over for carnor or fel with a cheap EPT. thats 15 hull and 15 base att. less dogdy and no double actions but you have more ships to take actions with. PS is really low too.. could also go with an omnicon group pilot with a HLC for the left over 28 points. Good support fire with 5 hull / 5 shields and not having to worry about being ioned to death at least with one ship. Force your opponent to either dealing with the 4 squints or your base cannon and improving your hull/shield to 22 for the list.

I've seen a lot of other people posting interceptor lists, they probably have some good input too. Most likely better than mine, as I'm mostly a rebel scum sort of guy.

I often, mentally, treat Mauler and especially Backstabber as Interceptors. Not quite the same defensively but when you can take both and upgrades for less than the cost of 2 interceptors it feels like a good call.

The biggest boon that they offer to the list is that they're capable of good damage without having Howlrunner. Standalone, they're good ships. Combined with two Interceptors that can shoot well, I think the list will be able to get some good damage in and add 3 HP to the list total.

I've been a fan of Hero's blog for a while and glad to see him come over to the game. Looking forward to more battle reports and analysis.
