Ship's engiseer wants to build a Knight (that mini-titan thing)

By Sebastian Yorke, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

Well, the ship's engiseer (a lvl 3 or so Explorator) wants to build a Knight (that mini-titan thing).

Can you give me ideas or suggestions on how it would be built?

I was thinking of giving it 1 months worth of work in Trade- Armourer for building the carapace. 3 month of work on "Technomat" for building the circuitry, servo-motors and the neural connections.

Also, he would need to get the schematics somewhere.

That... IF he has a Laboratorium or a Manufactorum inside the ship.

Well I think the first step would be him somehow getting permission to build a Knight from the appropriate group, in this case the Colegia Titanicus and/or one of the Knight Houses. Both of whom probably frown upon outsiders to their orders creating and wielding their proprietary titans. This being one of the more powerful military forces out there I'm sure they'd have methods of displaying their displeasure ranging from assassins to the boot of a Warlord.

Probably an endeavor all of it's own. On the up side if he did manage to convince them to let him build his "Knight Errant" they could certainly provide the schematics. Who else would have them? I dunno, that's pretty obscure. Maybe a Knight World exile?

Then he'd need to gather materials and get a workspace ready. Materials can be a simple acquisition test, unless you want them to be particularly exotic for whatever reason. Considering this thing is capable of housing titan class weaponry it's probably at least the size of a super-heavy tank like the baneblade (if not larger), I'm gonna suggest that the Laboritorium isn't big enough, but the Manufactorum is probably exactly the thing for it. A large cargo hold could also be used, but might incur a penalty for being improper facilities.

Then the build. I'm assuming he has a reasonable workforce of skilled workers. Since he probably can't find parts for any of this stuff "off the shelf," unless he goes to a Knight world or a forge world that builds titans he's going to have to make pretty much everything from scratch. I'd say the time for the armor carapace/shell is fine, but the frame and servos and guts would probably take a good four to six months to make the parts, put it together, and test. After that you need to create and mount the weaponry, which is probably going to take at least another couple of months. Round it up to a year. Considering the fact that this thing is the size of a large spacecraft (but not big as a proper voidship) and probably even more complex, it is a major undertaking.

I'd say an armorer test for the carapace, a techno mat for the skeleton and servos, another for the electronics, and one more for the power source, and another armorer test for the weaponry. Pretty much all of those would be at at least a -10 or worse in terms of difficulty.

The Explorator in my game has a Knight he recovered after a particularly dangerous and harrowing raid on an ancient space hulk. He has managed to keep it through a combination of luck, distance, and political maneuvering. To pilot it required Pilot: Titan and maintaining it requires Trade: Titan Engiseer . Both skills were purchased as Elite advances (Technomat has nothing to do with crafting items, it is solely rote memorization rituals for maintenance). Knights are extremely advanced machines with powerful machine spirits and specialized equipment. They aren't as big an impact on the game as you might fear, due to their large size and difficulty deploying planetside. Remeber that there are only a few of these in the entire Calaxis sector. That makes them Near Unique. By the crafting rules in Inquisitor's Handbook it would be a -30 skill check due to complexity and take months at least.

As for building one, the Engiseer is just starting to work on the idea. First he had to obtain the Knight STCs. Those were a Unique purchase through a contact in the Adeptus Titanicus. Next he is looking for manufacturing equipment sophisticated enough to produce such a powerful maching. That will be several more Unique and Near Unique purchases. After that he will need to gather up Tech Priests and workers to operate the manufactorum. Then he needs materials for his Near Unique construction. Finally, the manufactorum will spend up to a year constructing and consecrating the great work. He intends to make his developing forgeworld capable of producing 1-2 a year.
