Smugglers Alliance/Convoy - More YT-1300 Customs

By ZombieHedgehog, in X-Wing

I'd like to do the magnet mod on my B-wings so that I can swivel the cockpit, as well as other mods.

Are you cutting these with an exacto, or some other tool?
Before I start cutting on my birds, I wanted to check with you folks who have experience.

I have some small saw blades that are the size and shape of a standard X-Acto #11 blade. They fit in the knife handle like a normal blade, and as long as you're careful, they work fine. You can't use too much pressure or they'll bend, but they are very thin and don't remove too much material. You should be able to find them at a hobby shop.

I've just been using some an old knife I've had around for years, can't even remember where I got it from. I think you just need to have a sharp knife and be careful when cutting. The material used on the miniatures tends to be thick.

I managed to magentise my B-Wing, it was simple to do, just took a bit of time to complete as I was being very careful when cutting the cockpit. I do think I have used a magnet that is slightly too small though.

I think it could be good to have a look for some saw blades as Gullwind has suggested as you will probably have a little more control.

I should hopefully have a little progress to post on here soon, real life getting in the way of modelling. I'm just glad I still have some enthusiasm to get back to work, I'm looking forward to getting these projects finished.

Well, I've finally made a little progress, I managed to find a little time tonight to compete some work in the YT-2400. I'm still trying to carry on with the final detailing, although I still need to finish off the turret wall on the underside.

I managed to just about finish the engines, I just need to make sure everything in filed flat once glue has dried. Extra bits and bobs have been added to the hull and I have also began work on a new turret. Looking back at the old turret it was a littl too large when thinking about the scale of the ship and looking at pics of other YT-2400s, I think this will fit in more.

I've even managed to sort out the mount so it fits on to an official base. I've just cut the space for it, Ii do alpreciate the miniature on a proper base.

Well here are the pics:

I hope to get more work finished soon so I can get back to posting more regular updates on here. I'm also hoping to get 2 YT's and 2 HWK-290s finished so I can play a game with my smugglers alliance. I will try to remember to take some photos and post a battle report on the forums.

Jeez that is impressive, if you plan on casting that beast jn resin, make sure you put a shout out on the forums, I can't be the only one who would want one.

Looking good man!

Have you considered doing this extra storage for the YT-1300 from the Technical Manual.

Funnily enough I have a screen print of this on my phone. Wasn't sure what the top would look like and haven't really thought about what I could do to be honest with with.

Managed to find this image... Combined I don't think it would be that hard to do. I'm considering surface mounting magnets and having it entirely detachable.

Though the side view does seem to have extra panniers at the back.. I think going with the top down and leaving the engines clear is the best plan.

that would look cool.. hope to see some WIP shots soon.

Cheers Rodent, that pic is is a qaulity reference to work from. I'm hopefully going to be able to get some work done on my other projects before moving on but I think the additional storage modification will be pretty cool to do. Well I say I'm. It starting any more projects but I did start a HWK-290 conversion the other day for the smugglers alliance, I hope to be able to post some photos soon.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

I still need to get some research done in to casting although I so believe that the current YT-2400 won't hold up in the process and the main hull isn't solid. However, I do have a plan to try to make a solid version to try to get it cast. I also need to double check any legal issues that there might be, I don't want to be upsetting anyone or break any laws with this! I'll post updates once I have more information.

Just saw this, not sure how I have missed it before this. Excellent stuff on here. The 1300 conversions are clean and well executed and I cant wait to see where you go with the 2400. Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing the progress.

Started work on a HWK-290 conversion, I wanted to try to have as many different looking ships in a force.

I wanted this HWK- to be slightly smaller than the original model and to have a modified engine section. I liked the idea of having a smaller but quicker ship for smuggling. I plan on running my HWKs with ion cannons as support for the larger smuggling ships.

I just need to fill a few gaps and start the engines then I will get back to work on the larger ships.

I've also been having a look on google for more ships for inspiration. I thought about converting a Lambda Shuttle in to Lando's ship, Cobra as this would be a pretty straight forward conversion. I thought I could use the Lambda rules, mixing it in with a rebel list for casual games.

Cut that **** beak off, and give her a nice mean blunt nose.

;)

In SWG they had built the two ships to scale. You could also reference the interiors they made if anyone wanted to go crazy building a full interior.

Well after finally getting back in to building some custom figures I thought I'd get back on to building my custom ships for my smugglers fleet.

I have found some time while waiting for miniatures to arrive so I thought I would work on finishing some outstanding projects. I have decided to go back to the drawing board with the courageous miniature and will start again, once more materials arrive I will begin again.

I decided to finish my second HWK-290. As per previous progress I wanted to try to make the miniature look quite different to show the variety if ships that smugglers may customize.

Very nice!

Glad I've seen this thread; your YT-2400 is lush, I've been meaning to make one myself but finding scale diagrams is somewhat labourious :L

Beautiful work. Can't wait to see the finished paint jobs.

Nice conversion and excellent color choice on that HWK.

This is absolutely incredible. Great work!

Wish I had half that talent. I'm still nervous about my first repaint lol.

Hello! First time posting on here, had to create an account because your project was amazing enough to warrant a hearty "Fantastic job!". I would be interested in getting one of those sweet 2400's if you get around to making them on commission.

Thanks for posting the WIP photos!

Did you ever get a chance to cast the 2400? You would sell a boatload of them!

Agreed. I'd go for them as well~

I just need to work out a few final details the actually get the model finished.

I've made a start on finishing the model and hope to be able to post some photos of updates soon.

Managed to get some work done on the 2400:
