Mon Calamari Ships and Backup Shield Generators

By LibrariaNPC, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

This is something that comes up in narrative from time to time, and older games tried to incorporate it, but I don't know the best way to handle it with EotE. Since I've been trying my hand at designing ships lately, and I have a few Mon Cal ships, this is rather relevant to me right now.

Mon Calamari ships are known to have some of the best shields out there, mostly due to having backup generators to ensure that there are always shields. With that in mind, I can only think of the following ideas to incorporate that into the current rules:

1) Increase all shield bonuses.

2) Count it as a "backup shield generator" customization, granting a +1 (or two +1s for Silhouette 5 ships) to a shield facing.

3) Negate a critical hit against a shield system.

4) Reduce difficulties to do any work to shields (repair, angle, etc).

5) A combination of 2 and 3.

Anyone have any thoughts there?

Another note that comes up is the idea that Mon Calamari ships are, by design, able to act as submersibles. I can't really argue any changes to the main stats beyond the shields, but that's just my view. Anyone have any input there?

Mon Cal ships look "streamlined" because that is the style preferred by the Aquatic species. Unless they have huge amounts of repulsorlifts I do not see any way they can also amphibious.

Also the M80 allready has more shields then an ISD.

If you look at the various notes, a lot of the Man Cal freighters are amphibious as well as being spaceworthy. Take the MC-18 and the DeepWater-class light freighter as examples. Both are built to be in space as well as under water, with shields that can, after minor calibrations via the controls (and making them weaker to attacks in the process), deal with the pressures of being under water.

Thus my question regarding how people are viewing it.

I assume that's in the AoR Beta? If so, I don't have access to that (my FLGS couldn't get it in), which doesn't help ny research very much.

Higher shields on a capital ship can be just better shields or more generators, still leaving the question out there.

The MC 18 and Deepwater are small craft, an MC80 as a submersible is a little odd for me... but there's been stranger lately so if you really want to...

As for the backup shields, yeah, the one in the Beta already has more then an ISD, so that's probably what they had in mind, though if the shields were down having the shields come back up on a Triumphant repair roll would be ok with me. Not a really common situation, but pulling a Zelbinion is possible too i suppose...

FFG likes to keep it simple. I try to mimic that. just give them more shields then an average ship. and maybe downgrade the difficultly when shields go down as the result of a critical hit

and if you really want a ship that is over a 1000 meters long, able to go undersea like a submarine as well as fly in space. go right ahead.

Modern day subs are up to 179 metres long and I am pretty sure they would not be able to cope in space. So I can quite easily believe in a mon cal ship of 1000m being able to go underwater, after all Kirk did it.

after all Kirk did it.

While romancing Admiral Ackbar, no less!

It was a trap.
