Closest Space Marine Chapters

By Necronis, in Dark Heresy

In my years of playing 40k I've never collected the Space Marines nor read any books on them. As such I have no idea what Chapters are based closest to Calixis. Im not planning on allowing them as P.C.'s , just wanting to know who's BattleBarge might have to be boarded to check Geneseed Purity, angry Chaplains/Zealots ducked and the general hammer poised over the Adepts failure incase more than the PDF, Arbites or Imperial Guard need to be sent in.

Only help I can give is from a wikia's entry on the "Calixis Expeditionary Force":

"Adeptus Astartes Space Marines

Imperial Fists 2nd Company

Black Templars Fighting Company Heinman "

Hopes it helps for something :)

Well, being that Calixis is located firmly with the Segmentum Obscurus, the closest Marines would be the Space Wolves, coming from Fenris, and the Iron Hands from Medusa. Oh, and the remains of the Planet of Caliban are in the segmentum as well, so there's at least a decent possiblity to encounter Dark Angels. But realistically, since the Space Marines are constantly flying about the Galaxy putting out fires for the Imperium, you could essentially have any chapter from the Blood Angels to the Ultramarines show up if you WANTED to. Especially given that the Calixis sector is REALLY close to the Eye of Terror in a galatic sense.

Fun fact: Given it's location in the 40k Galaxy, the sector is also really close to 3 different Eldar Craft Worlds. Ulthwe probably being the closest followed by Luganath and Yme-Loc which are both still pretty close in a galatic sense.

I think that the only two mentioned in the fluff so far are the Black Templars and the Iron Hands, both of which had a presence in the sector at one point, but have since left. The Black Templars are spread out across the Imperium, so it wouldn't be that odd to see them there. However, you kinda need a reason for their presence. The BTs go where the fighting goes - so they'd be there to put down a xenos threat (say, the Ork waaagh on the fringe of the sector), but down a heretic uprising etc etc.

Thanks for the info. Just wanted to give the adepts a sense of familiarity. The Adepta Sororitas would most likely come from the Convent Prioris on Terra, and was looking for a likely group of Space Marines to give it some depth. The non-codex Space Wolves will do nicely. Even more friction between the groups! Cant wait to see their reactions to the prospect of having to police a group of feral bio-weapons in power armour.

As a GM you can have whatever you like being there to be honest, I had an adventure when they were on a Blood Ravens Battle Barge trying to find traces of Heresy, it was intresting because they were in a situation where they could'nt order them to do anything. It would be cool to play a Space Marine but in somthing like Deathwatch over Dark Heresy.

The unearthed apocrypha history of the Calixis Sector mentioned a couple of chapters who participated in the conquest of the region. I think one of them was called the Charnel Guard. Cool name, but that's all the information there is about them-their name. And just because they participated in the conquest of the region, it doesn't mean they're geographically close.

And the Hammers of the Emperor might be around nearby...

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Don't go for known Chapters make your own. I believe that I once read that there is thousands of Chapters. So don't go with one o the known Chapters. Instead make up you own with it's own history and secrets. I think it would add to your game. But this is just my opinion. To prove that there is more then the well known Chapters who has heard of the Mantis Marines. They are in the Warrior Brood book.

Actually its Mantis Warriors and they are a well known chapter - they fought in Badab War, one of the best known events in WH40k history.

**** I need to brush up on my Space Marine chapters. Ok sorry about the mistake there. Thanks for letting me know that. But my origional point still stands. There are many chapters not all of them have a name yet. Heck Relic made one so can you.

I just didnt want to "pop" in a Space Marine Homeworld that wasnt supported in the information given and was just wondering what the closest "documented" Chapter was. The Calixis Sector is considered a frontier or fringe secter so I dont envision it having its own Marine Chapter. It only has like what? 50 Sisters of Battle or so.

That and using a Codex Chapter would give my group a sense of still being in the 40k galaxy we wargame in- not that any of the ideas dont have their own merit. I just didnt know whose Homeworld or base of operations was around the Calixis Sector.
