I just "washered" all of my bases tonight. They are gonna be awesome.
Washers under the ship base
Did my first game with washer on some ships and no-washer on the others, it makes a difference.
Still planning on trying magnets, I should get them tomorrow...
Also, I'm pretty sure you can get a 3'x3' metal sheet for less than 8 pounds.
I little while ago I found a website offering 24"x48" magnetic sheets for about $25, which could easily be made into 36"x36". I bought some rare earth magnets also, which, while strong, really work best with stainless steel or other types of metal, which can get prohibitely expensive and difficult to transport. That's why I like the idea of washers on the bottoms of the ships adding weigh and even a slight attraction to a magnetic sheet underneath. Right now I just use pea-sized balls of Loctite Fun-Tac stuck on the underside of the ship base (two in the front, one in the back) to prevent movement on the board. It works well enough that I'd need to find something a lot better to actually sink the money into. The nice thing about the Fun-Tac is that it costs around $3, and you get plenty in a package to stick it on all your ships.
I also bought a few 1/2" flat washers, but I've found them to be slightly taller than the bottom of the ship base, elevating the base approximately 0.5-1mm.
Do you guy also have that problem? And will it affect the tournament validity of the base?
Thanks!
Yup - Crown Bolt/Rustoleum 1/2″ Galvanised Flat Washers, cheaper at Home Depot than Lowes, and cheaper still by the 50 count box — $14. I used my all-purpose Zap-A-Gap.

Nope. I made sure to get thin ones.
Did you use the 1/2" washers Wookie Hunter, or smaller ones?
