Anyone got a Star Wars NPC generator?

By Darth Hideous, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi guys n' gals

Does any of you have a npc generator for the Star Wars universe?

As a GM my players often ask about names of some random npc they encounter. Sometimes I have a name ready - and sometimes even a great personality to go with it. But sometimes the players can sense this person isent important.

Thats why I really could use a generator. So with a click I can get a race, name, personality, attitude with the pc's, perhaps even a dark secret, ect.

Sometimes a "nobody" npc can become a friend or foe in the next adventure :)

This is a narrative system, the official stats are provided for uniformity across common NPCs, and the minion/group/rival/nemesis system is what's used to determine challenge. It's not like D20 systems where NPCs need to be a specific level to prevent auto-curbstomping by the PCs.

Almost everything is represented in the book or so close all it takes is an equipment change, and possibly a slight skill change and you're good. For example the weequay mafia lieutenant in my campaign is just a Twi'lek black marketeer's stats with just a holdout blaster and datapad for his gear. There's no stats for Weequay mafia lieutenant in the book, but the stats I'm using represent what I had in mind for the character's role in the organization and campaign. Easy, done, no problem.

If you really need something odd on the fly use the following formula and you'll be in the ball park most of the time:

If you need an emergency rival, pick the player that's closest to what you need, use his stats for the rival.

If you need an emergency Minion:

All attributes 2, groups skills in the top three skill for their role, one weapon that fits their role. If required 1 or 2 pieces of gear that fits their role.

Example: "oh crud, I need some guerrilla fighters for this jungle encampment..."

All attributes 2

Skills: ranged heavy, stealth, vigilance

gear: blaster carbine

Emergency rival that isn't like one of the PCs:

Top three attributes for their role 3, all others 2, top three to five skills boosted by 1-3 depending on their role and purpose. Adversary 1, one weapon, 1-3 pieces of equipment appropriate for their role, armor if appropriate.

Example: "Oh crud, I need their leader..."

Brawn, Agility, Cunning 3, all others 2

Leadership 1

Ranged heavy 2

Stealth 2

Survival 1

Vigilance 2

Adversary 1

Gear: Blaster carbine, comlink, datapad with map showing where I wanted the players to go instead of tangling with the guerrillas...

Nemesis should be planned in advance pretty much every time, so if you need an emergency one that isn't in the book you've probably gone completely off the rails and it's time to call it a night.

And that'll usually cover you at least for the adventure you're on. If you think the character will be recurring you can then go back and expand their stats to cover anything specific you think they need.

Ghostofman thanks for sharing. That's a great piece of info.

I can't help you with the generator, but there are ones out there. In my opinion I'd have a name, race, etc. available for NPC's the group may interact with. Given that a triumph may lead to that NPC reoccurring in the narrative. Take the time in your game prep and have them ready. There's nothing worse as a player to ask and the GM be like, "wait one let me generate one." Nothing says 'unimportant' more than that.
