The game takes place ABY...

By Yepesnopes, in Game Masters

I cannot find if there is a specific year where the setting takes place. I know it is just after the destruction of the first Death Star and that it is up to me (the GM) to decide when and where I want to run my campaign. Yet I will like to know if there is a default year stated in the book.

Cheers,

Yepes

It's basically up to you. The only mention I've seen is that the game assumes to start shortly after the battle of Yavin. So I'm guessing the answer to your question is most likely 1ABY.

Personally I like to set my Star Wars games (including EotE) a little bit prior to this, with a fledgeling Alliance still struggling to find a leg to stand on, work in Mon Mothma's official Declaration of Rebellion and let the players get involved in the early formation of the rebellion (if they care about getting involved. If not it will just be stuff that happens in the background and maybe get in the way of their plans as the Empire ramps up presence in the Outer Rim in response to those pesky rebels).

I think the destruction of Alderaan is such a significant event of this time period that relegating it to something that already happened would be a shame.

Exactly as Slaunyeh says. After all the time posting on this forum, I am finally starting to get players together, and starting to teach them the system. (we're spread out and not all of them have a copy yet.) My pitch included mention that I'm planning to go into Age of Rebellion. But Edge of the Empire has a lot of appeal to my group of players. Setting the game at an earlier time lets them be the carefree independent adventurers for a while, perhaps having a few dealings with rebel operatives who work with outlaws and smuggling rings to obtain supplies and weapons for the alliance. But for the most part, they really don't throw in with either side of the galactic conflict. The destruction of Alderaan will be the catalyst that makes them decide. With Age of Rebellion, the players can decide whether they want to have their character join the alliance, or start a new character in one of the AoR careers (standard creation, then advance the character up to about the point their old one was)

I'm pretty sure that Force and Destiny will end up being a whole new campaign. There'd been talk with the group during our d20 games about doing an all Jedi game.

The default starting year for EotE is 0-1 ABY.

This is my understanding also.

I never thought of using a time period before Alderaan... But I like it.

I can see it now... The PCs have just pulled into the Alderaan system to sell some smuggling supplies. They've already been to Alderaan, and the game has based around it. All of their contacts and enemies base off of Alderaan, and they can already tell that it will be the basis of the game. As they fly towards the planet, the standard customs officer greets them. They've been on his good side, and he was childhood friends with one of the members. He friendly starts telling them some of the open locations in the Capitol to sell their goods--when the PCs hear screams in the background and the customs officer early mutter "Oh my God..."

Moments later, the PCs witness the destruction of a planet.

They are immediately contacted by officials trying to roundup the ships that were lucky enough to be farther away from the planet. Some of the closer ones start to get caught in the repercussions, and the PCs are no excuse, as they were about to come to atmosphere. They have to maneuver through the asteroids that now come hurling at them and at the same time try to help other helpless civilians who have no idea what has just happened, and who are for the most part babbling and choking on their own tears over what in blue blazes is going on.

Once this is over, the PCs are taken to the refugee camp of multiple ships brought together a safe distance from the Grave Yard. The PCs must now start a new life, which is up to the GM to help in.

If you want to, you could even make the game non-canon and have another planet be destroyed, just to add an extra bit of shock. We all know that Aldraan was destroyed, but who would have thought the Empire would strike the minor Rebel controlled planet that the PCs were visiting? Who would have guessed they would rather destroy the planet than capture it? It just adds a real horror to the game to know everything you've strived for is lost and without a single warning.

I started my game in 5 BBY and almost one year of game time has passed. The PCs have zero interest in Alderaan, and I'm not too interested it forcing it.

I think that's fine. When/if they get that far ahead in the time line it can just be something they hear about in the passing that may or may not reinforce their "well, those Empire guys sure are jerks" opinion.

What I like about starting in BBY is portraying the slow build-up in Imperial presence in response to the growing rebel alliance, which gets in the way of "honest" businessmen everywhere. :)

dark times, best times

Wants 100 acres of prime beach front real estate on Alderaan? No?

My players have had zero interest in dealing with the Rebellion/Empire. For all they know some day they are going to be shipping some crates of Thermal underwear to a drop off point near the Anoat system, and maybe do some gambling in Bespin's Cloud city afterwards.

The events in my games take place shortly after the Battle of Yavin. It gives the players are good point of reference since most of them have only seen the movies. The PCs know something big just happened, and they really want to steer clear. But in true star wars fashion they cannot avoid it.
