So...
Does the new, amazing, objective triggers its ability if I play the saber on Mara?

I don't see why not. I think that is part of the combo.
Well, you do not commit her, but she is considered committed. Maybe the wording has a gap or something. Like the difference between "play" and "put into play" but with Force committing. So... Does the objective trigger?
I'm no rules official for this game, but based on my experience in dozens of other TCGs and LCGs, I would say the objective doesn't trigger. You aren't committing Mara to the Force, but she is considered committed to the Force.

I can see it this way now. The lightsaber never says you commit Mara Jade to the force, so I'm starting to think the objective won't react. Since my previous thinking was running into that other paradox I posted, it must be ruled this way, although still unofficial.
Don't think it'll react. You didn't commit her to the force. She is considered committed to the force. To commit something to the force is a specific action that requires usage of the 3 force cards.
The objective won't work with her.
It will work perfect with ISB Liaison, Icetromper, and other unit that allows you to get your Force card back.
I can confirm that FiendishDevil and Caal have the right of it, noting rules pg 14: "To commit a unit, a player takes one of his available Force cards and places it underneath the unit card..." (p. 14), and I've confirmed it previously with FFG. In this way, a unit can move into the state of being committed to the Force via multiple ways: one is going thru the process of formally being committed.to the Force (i.e. using a Force card), and another way is via effect (i.e. considered committed). Distinguishing between the two processes is going to be important re what effects trigger and what don't.

Neither of those things are sith units

ninja'd, so, I'll quote instead. yeah. if it said "when you commit a unit..." instead of specifying it had to be a [sith] unit, it would work and be an awesome combo

Well... Owned! :-)
The problem with that is it has the Sith Affiliation icon. So it does have to be a "Sith" unit committed in order to trigger.
