Race/Chase (on vehicles)

By blaked, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

If I wanted to do a cinematic 'chase' (or maybe something akin to a pod race) - as far as I can find, it's just opposed pilot checks

So the speed of the vehicle isn't a factor? That seems very odd to me...

Thanks

If I recall, difficult terrain requires a check where speed sets the difficulty or at least effects it.

after the pilot check is performed the speed of the winner becomes a factor.

I thought that was only 'the chased can pull away by the speed value' or something like that?

It does seem odd, if the participants are on a NASCAR track but using different speed vehicles.

But that's reality, and this is Star Wars.

So you're probably not talking about a nice clean open track, but a sewer system, or a canyon, or a forest, or a factory that makes Palpatine Bobble heads. Now factor in the narrative it will start to come together and fill in the holes.

Lets say the PC is in a shop buying a sock to stuff in the mouth of the annoying princess he's been charged with protecting. While haggling over the price a bad guy hops in the PC's landspeeder, locks the princess in the trunk, and starts to drive away.

So, you have the PC roll Athletics and the bad guy rolls Piloting, with the PC scoring some successes and maybe even an advantage, but instead of saying: "Yeah you run out and into the street and totally run like 45 mph and catch up."

You say: "You see the landspeeder driving out of the parking place and you take off running. You cut across the shopping centers plaza and use a bench to launch yourself over a Rodian mime performing for a group of children. By the time the landspeeder has dodged around the startled pedestrians and navigated the maze of speeders in the shopping centers parking area to get to the exit, your mime cluttered shortcut has allowed you to close the gap!"

See, that makes sense...and has a mime...
