Luke, Kyle, Dutch

By yoink101, in X-Wing

I was messing around with a list to take advantage of the Moldy Crow, here's what I came up with.

Kyle Katarn (21)+Push the Limit (3)+Blaster Turret (4)+Recon Specialist (3)+Moldy Crow (3)=34

Dutch Vander (23)+R5-K6 (2)+Proton Torpedo (4)+Ion Cannon Turret (5)=32

Then for my third ship I would probably go with

Luke Skywalker (28)+R2-D2 (4)=32

This would hit 100 points exactly. The target locks and focus actions would be outrageous! I haven't tried it yet, but hope to soon. Any thoughts?

Well, at a glance, PTL on Kyle is not as beneficial as you might think, because he can not take Focus twice. However, as an offensive platform, any HWK with a focused, targetlocked blaster turret shot can be devestating. With Kyle, however, you'll more often be feeding your focus to other people, so won't have the double focus needed to pull that off after a couple rounds. Additionally, R5-K6 is very chancy, and may not work at all during your games (remember, it's only a 3/8 chance of working). Luke with R2 is always a solid pick, but for this team, what you are lacking is some sustained offensive punch.

Dropping PTL, the droid, and the proton torps gives you 9 points, which you could then feed back into the team as something more offensive. Try upgrading Luke to Wedge for 1 point, giving him PTL for 3 more, and an Engine Upgrade for another 4. The last point can go to give Dutch a generic R5 to erase some ship crits, or to upgrade Kyle's blaster to an ion, so he can always sling his shot 360 and use a defensive focus if need be.

Why can't he focus twice? Is there a rule I missed? I see him getting 4-8 focus tokens in the first one or two turns (double actions + the recon specialist) and then having enough to hand them out and for the next few rounds and still activate his blaster turret regularly. I do agree with the Wedge thing, but I like Luke's survivability, and 3 dice with consistent target locks is not something to ignore. I like the idea of the R5-K6, but I agree that it is chancy. I think it is mitigated that each time it works, would allow dutch to give out a target lock as well, letting him use his own action.

You can't perform the same action twice in one round. With the Moldy Crow title card, you can allow him to keep the ones he's created already, but you can't do more than one in a single round.

Is that rule somewhere in the rulebook, or something that has been announced by ffg?

edit: Never mind, I found it on the bottom of page 9

Forgive me if I'm wrong but doesn't recon specialist give you a second focus when you take the focus action?

That way you can generate 2 a turn and hang on to them.

I dont believe you will get a competitive list from this but if you want to use these ships to throw Target locks and focus around for fun then you could try

Kyle

Dutch

Garven

Kyle+Garven is insane, particularly if Kyle's in the "Moldy Crow" with a Recon Spec. Adding "Dutch" Vander at this point is just overkill.

Here's how it goes down between Kyle, Garven, and Dutch.

All 3 move and attack simultaneously, so the order of their move is irrelevant, leaving you the ability to do some very tight maneuvering.

Kyle focuses as his action, and gains 2 tokens from the Recon Specialist.

'Dutch' Target Locks, and so does Kyle.

Garven Target Locks.

Combat starts, and Kyle gives a focus token to Garven.
Garven shoots (Target Locked and Focused), and gives a focus token to 'Dutch' ,
Kyle Shoots (Target Locked and Focused)
'Dutch' shoots, (Target Locked and Focused), rolls his odds with R5-K6 to Target Lock on the defender. If he does, than either Kyle or Garven gets a free Target Lock action.

The bare-bones version of this combo comes in at 78 points, leaving 22 for things like an Astromech for Garven, a Pilot Talent for Kyle, Turrets for Kyle and "Dutch", Torpedoes for Garven and Dutch, and/or Ship Upgrades for all 3.

I, personally, would go with R2-D2 and Advanced Torpedoes for Garven , Expert Handling for Kyle (the added maneuverability from a barrel roll is great for mid-late game, when you've built up focus tokens with the " Moldy Crow " title, and dodging Target Locks is just gravy), and Ion Turrets for both Kyle and "Dutch" ,

That's a really great combo, Dracon. :)

ooooo. I like that a lot.
