Wedge the Interceptor

By yoink101, in X-Wing

I love using Wedge with Push the Limit, Engine Upgrade and the lowly R2. I haven't noticed this combination being used by a lot with other people. I've seen wedge with push the limit a few times, but he seems to get swarm tactics or squad leader a lot. I think having him as an interceptor with two actions is one of his best uses because of his high pilot skill. The only imperial ships likely to move after him are soontir fel and vader.

I've only used him in one game so far, and he performed fantastically with this set up, so I'm looking to see if it just worked against my opponent or if other people find success in different ways. My opponent was flying a handful of TIEs and I was able to maneuver outside of their firing arcs for most of the game by boosting.

Any thoughts? Other uses for wedge?

That is a lethal combo on Wedge, but makes him pricey to field. It is especially useful if you can control the urge to use PtL every turn and use it when it brings true benefit.

I like Wedge with Expose and use Biggs to draw their fire away.

I love flying Wedge w/ PTL and R2. But I've never tried it with the engine upgrade. Mainly because he seems to have such a target on his back that I feel required to take Biggs as well. And that combo comes in at 58 points. Leaving 42 points remaining, which seems just PERFECT for two rookies. But with the B wings and the increased viability of 3 rebel ship builds, I might have to give it a go.

You said it yourself: it's expensive. IMO the most cost-effective wedge build is just wedge+push the limit+r2 astromech. Engine upgrade is good, but I don't think it's really that much better for damage than just target lock+focus with 3 dice vs boosting to a range 1 shot with just target lock OR focus.

Wedge is powerful but he is not any more survivable than a rookie pilot. Engine upgrade may let him boost out of firing arcs sometimes, but maneuverability is not the x-wing's specialty and it may be smarter to dump as few extra points into wedge as possible and try and beef up the rest of your squadron instead, either to give the opponent a tougher choice in who to shoot at or to give the rest of your ships some extra punch if/when Wedge goes down

That's what I was able to use the boost for though, survivability. Doing something to add to defense is great, but boosting to get out of the line of fire and still being able to target lock, was fantastic. This could be mitigated by having enough enemies, but I was playing against someone with only 5 ships that had been split into two groups.

Actually unless you are using tournament initiative rules, Wedge will always move last, even after Soonter and Vader. If you give him PTL + R2 + EU, you will need to be sure to play him defensively. Wedge Draws a lot of Hate naked, Imagine how much every one will want to kill him so upgraded. He is a pretty serious investment of points.

That being said, I will probably try him just like this. It sounds awsome.

A ship that is destroyed before it can shoot is the best way to make it so it doesn't kill Wedge. I use swarm paired with a rookie to get 6-8 dice against a single target at PS9. Better cost to benefit ratio and it isn't putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak.

I was expecting to see Wedge Antilles in an Interceptor with Push. THAT is scary to think about.
