Shield Upgrade for ships with no shields?

By Scurvy Lobster, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi!

I have been wondering if it is possible to use the Shield Upgrade modification on a ship like the Tie Interceptor (that has no standard shields)?

Can you even go nuts and add several Shield Upgrades to the same ship? :)

Yes to your first question, no to the second.

The rules say one modification can be added to any ship, so even an Academy Pilot can fly into battle with a shield point, but only one.

There is a title card coming out with the new Interceptor pack that will allow two different modifications, but as of right now there is no way (within the rules) to add more than one of any single modification to a ship. Of course, you could always just try it for fun.

Thank you for the answer. It cleared things up for me :)

The wording of the card title is what makes it a little confusing, I think.

Calling it a shield upgrade makes it sounds like it simply upgrades existing shields.

It is perfectly legal to use as a ship upgrade, adding a shield to a ship that doesn't normally have them.

Think of it as a less extreme version of the upcoming targeting computer upgrade in the Aces pack - that one is just a bit more obvious because it's clear that if it could only be used with a ship that already has the target lock ability, it would add absolutely nothing.

having 2 shield upgrades runs 8 pts. I believe the royal tie title costs 0 (don't qoute me on that) though you can only have the title on PS 5 or higher ties. Seems rather expensive for just 2 shields.. might be worth it if you had extra points i guess, don't see anyone using a list with multiple shielded ties.. might as well just use an advanced then. I do like themed lists though...

Oddeye, a PtL + 3 evade X-Wing? Hell yes!

Well and, again, as was stated I'm pretty sure the two upgrades can't be the same (no 2x shields).

The combo I'm looking forward to is Fel with PTL and a Targeting Computer. :)

The Shield Upgrade can go anywhere.

Although it is the upgrade that most logically could be used multiple time and with the fewest balance problems (you only "see" on shield at a time) you can still only add it once. The title card for the Interceptor will allow two DIFFERENT upgrades; I'll simply suggest shield + hull or stealth device instead of double shields.

It may be "expensive" but double shields on an T/Int isn't too far out of line. Alpha Squadron Pilot + 2 shield upgrades = 26 points while Rookie Pilot with Engine Upgrade also equals 26 points. The question then becomes how do +1 PL and Target Lock compare to getting Barrel Roll and Evade actions plus a better movement dial?

As CW pointed out above, Royal Guard TIE allows two DIFFERENT modifications. No double shields.

I mean it's still cool, especially with a couple more modifications like Hull upgrade or Targeting Computer coming at the same time. But you can't double up on a single modification.

And also noted earlier in my own post which went unquoted.

That paragraph is just arguing that spending the points on two shield upgrades really would NOT be all that expensive when compared to other things that would cost about the same number of points. Looking back on it I realized I left out one VERY important factor in the Alpha Squadron Pilot + 2 Shields compared to the Rookie Pilot + Boost evaluation; the Interceptor still has its +1 defense die over the X-Wing despite having the same firepower, hull and shield.

You're right, and my bad for missing it.

But Rookie has still better Pilot Skill. He fires before Alpha.

That was acknowledged. It also would have the Target Lock options. Those two options compare to the Interceptor's better dial, roll and evade action options, and the Interceptor would still have 3 defense dice to the Rookie's 2.

Rookie + Engine: 21+4=25

Not 26.

Bad math on my part then.
