Pronounciation of "Mythos"...

By petszk, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Not very important topic, but how do people pronounce it?

I was playing AH with a mate who is a long time Lovecraft fan, in only his 2nd game of AH.

I pronounced mythos as "mith - oss" (ie the word "myth" with an "oss" on the end).

He swears it's pronounced "My - thos" (ie the word "my" with a "thoss" on the end).

Who is right?

Or how about "mee-thoss"?

The official dictionary pronuciation: mith-os.

I pronounce it "mythos."

That one. The right one.

Mithos. One verb. It's the only logical way of saying it.

Glad you cleared that one Brian partido_risa.gif ! So right one or right one cool.gif ?

It's a greek word, so that's how I pronounce it:

I.e. "mit - oss" (it starts like the word "myth" except it doesn't end with a 'th' sound; instead you pronounce the 't' followed by an aspirate).

Actually, I'm not quite sure if the 'y' in myth is pronounced the right way in English. I cannot think of any English word that uses that umlaut. I'm German, so I'd spell it phonetically like this: Mütoss.

I've found this: Greek Alphabet with Phonetic Values

So, the word would be spelled thus: mu + upsilon + theta + omikron + sigma

Except I disagree that theta is the same phonem as in 'thin'. It's NOT pronounced like a 'th' sad.gif
