A Day In The Life...

By PrettyHaley, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Does anyone have ideas about the sort of entertainment that people enjoy in the Star Wars universe? Do they have the equivalent of movies? Television? Music stars other than the bands hired to play in bars or in certain Hutt palaces? Books (you know... romance novels where a girl falls in love with a sparkly Jedi)? Are there popular sports other than the occasional pod race (that I think was actually illegal)? What other popular things might there be? Do people camp in front of stores every time a new comlink is released?

Are there any major religions at all? I think I've only heard droids say anything that seemed to make me think they had some kind of religion. C3P0 said "Thank the maker." at least once. I doubt he was talking about Anakin.

I'm just curious about what my character might do in her spare time. I'd usually ask my dad stuff like this but he's away on business. And, even if there aren't things like this in books or the movies, maybe we can make some up?

Holovids are kinda like DVDs. As to the rest, I don't really know the EU well enough, but I would assume that people of all species need entertainment.

Other than that, there would certainly be similarities to everyday real-life, except on a galactic/planetary scale. So instead of people waiting outside a store for a new release of a droid model (note comlinks are not so much like smartphones, more like durable walkie-talkies), you might have people sitting on their starships in orbit waiting for docking clearance to the industrial world where they're made.

Here's an amusing article suggesting most citizens of the Star Wars galaxy might be illiterate and unable to read at all:

Very interesting article, but there is that language script used in the movies. They may only be functional, but people can't be completely illiterate.

It is an interesting article. TONS of conjecture though, and really...it's a movie. You might as well presume that people in name-your-fave-fanstasy-flick (or modern-day drama) also can't read. And you might as well assume that people in Star Wars don't use the bathroom (I know it's called refresher in the EU).

Yeah, but it makes a lot of sense except for the Aurabesh script, and even he references it in the article. Most people in fantasy couldn't read though which makes perfect sense if it is set in a medieval universe. And Star Wars is a Space Fantasy setting merged with a few western and space opera tropes. So it makes a lot of sense.

I find his ideas about the political situation very interesting from that point of view and it reinforces the idea that most people in that universe are peasants or victorian factory workers.

But many of the less educated entertainments should be available.

They watch Diahann Carroll and Jefferson Airplane in virtual reality:

I can't tell what the visuals might have been like in that video... but what I heard made my ears bleed. I'm not exactly sure what the Star Wars Holiday Special is... and I'm pretty sure I know why I've never heard of it!!!

Its interesting to think that most people might be illiterate, though. I do recall my dad saying there's no paper in the Star Wars universe... so I guess, wherever there's no access to power systems or electronics, you wouldn't have access to much written material, either.

Thank you, Awayputurwpn. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that there's plenty of information available. I guess most people would have looked on wookiepedia right away but those wiki sites take a while for me to work my way through.

Understandable. Let me know if I can be of more/better assistance!

I believe they refer to it as 'flimsy'

Yeah, there are plenty of EU sources that talk about the kind of stuff this article says "don't exist" in the Star Wars universe. Problem is, the author here is only using the films as a source, which is something common to many, many Star Wars fans.

My thoughts: "It was an interesting article, but I don't agree with the hasty conclusions, primarily because it doesn't at all fit my vision of what Star Wars is. Move along."

Well, if you read the EU novels, one of the more recent series had Luke travel to Chiss space. He and his team were taken to a library on Csilla that had ACTUAL BOOKS.

Right :) As opposed to datapads and such.

I looked up and read all about the Star Wars Hiliday Special and... Oh Em Gee!!

Was this like Jar Jar? I mean, for those of us who were very young when we saw Star Wars, Jar Jar was great! But adults hated him. Was the Holiday Special like that?

No, nobody ever liked the Holiday Special.

A serious answer for you: go get Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments from the Rim. The back half of the book is full of musical groups and albums, holovids, newsfeeds and reporters and a bunch of color that isn't necessary to run the game, but fills in details.

In the X-Wing Alliance video game, your brother jokes about your the time your character spent playing space simulation games being the reason for his good piloting skills. I think that pretty much confirms the existence of video games in the star wars universe, we also know they use simulators for pilot training.

In some of the young adult star wars books the kids play games with balls, or with droids. Chewbacca and C-3PO play a game of holographic chess (dejarik I think) in Episode IV of the movies.

Also in more of the EU people definitely read books even if there is no paper, they read it on datapads which sound much like a kindle. I like the idea of there being a twilight equivalent in Star Wars read by the soppy EU female characters.

There's also a picture in one of the d20 Revised books (Galactic Campaign Guide, IIRC) of a bunch of kids playing with action figures. One side has Sepratists and the other group Clones. Best part is where one kid beans another with a figure.

I remember the WEB supplement Galaxy Guide 9: Fragments from the Rim has a lot of detail on leisure activities, including descriptions of both anti- and pro-imperial bands, most of which were banned by the Imperial Board of Culture..

It included famous bands like Boba Fett and the Assassin Droids, The Emperor's New Clothes and Red Shift Limit (infamous for their two singles, 'Permission to think?' and 'Permission Denied'.)

West End Games didn't happen to release the Galaxy Guide 9 books as a pdf?

My dad has a HUGE library of game books and, would you believe, IT WAS IN THERE!! I just prefer digital books to dead tree ones.

Totally off-topic: The PDF format was initially released in 1993. The same year as the Galaxy Guide 9. :)

Great that you found it though. It's a fantastic (sometimes hilarious) read.

No PDF version of it sadly as that wasn't a publishing option back then. :(

Oddly enough, I was running the adventure in the GM supplement last night and there were filing cabinets with paper files. I ran with it, but I was thinking about this topic the entire time.

Sent you a PM with it.
