Limited skill slection for Driver and Pilot

By Zuloth, in Game Mechanics

I have noticed that the Driver and the Pilot specializations in the Ace Career have a rather limited choice of skills. All four of their Specialization skills for both of them are repeated from the Ace career.

They get no new skills for specializing, but on the other hand they are guaranteed two skills at 2 from the beginning.

I can’t decide if it is a bad thing or not, but my initial thought was “hmm this seems wrong”

No, they are specialists. Starting characters begin with two ranks in their most used skills. They are more focused.

Well they are Aces so they should be good at what they do :-)

I have no problem with the fact that that they can start with 2 in 2 skills, if you want to focus on a limited area then fine by me.

I was more worried by the limited skill selection to begin with, but they are off course specialist, so probably not a problem.

Your math is wrong.

They get 4 of the 8 career skills, and 2 of the 4 specialty skills. This does not guarantee two at level 2 - it allows it, but far from guarantees it. It could instead be 6 of the 8 at 1. A droid in field is guaranteed one at level 2 and at least 6 held,

Also, and a bit off topic, using dark font color makes your posts hard to read, since the board has a default color of a slate gray.

Its the forum software. its ran on IPB3, I run a forum for work that uses the same software, and it has to do with the browser he is using formatting everything by default for some reason (don't see it as much anymore, it might get solved if he updates his browser, could have been fixed in a later version). Its why we moved to a lighter setup on ours.

The "doubled-up" skills for Career and Specialization are absolutely intentional.

As a starting Ace/Pilot, you absolutely should be able to start with 2 ranks in the Piloting (Space) career, for instance.

The base Ace Career needs to have those skills to represent what it does. Also, if someone else wants to branch into the Pilot Specialization, the Piloting skills need to be there for that.

I think it's working exactly as designed.

Yeah, consider that most training ace pilots receive is in the flight simulator. They are focused so as to survive in space :) Scattering your focus ends up making you ineffective and, where you might get knocked around on the ground, in space you only need one mistake to get blown up or sucked into vacuum...and that's it.

Sorry I was looking at it from the wrong direction. They can off course just chose som other skills for their career skill if they want a broader slection. Never mind it was not a big problem to begin with, just something I noticed.
