Which Act 2 to do next?

By jadedbacon, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

So our group is down to the last 2 Act 2 quests before the Finale in our LoR campaign. I'm running OL and have been doing pretty well. 4 OL Wins, 2 Hero wins.

Did one Act 2 quest, Web of Power, in which I won barely. Heroes let a small opening for Ariad to run her fat spider butt and poor ol Nanok keeps being the victim of Blinding Speed.

There are 2 quests I have in mind, Fountain of Insight (I think that's the name? the one where the heroes can unlock the 3rd ability for their ally) or Fire and Brimstone.

The extra xp from winning Fountain of Insight would be great as I need to get 3 xp in the next two quests in order to get a 3 xp card before the Finale (kinda split between Magus and Saboteur, with a sprinkle of Warlord for that Blood Rage goodness). However the Twin soul card looks great as that gives me an extra lieutenant in the finale if I play it right and keep Merrick from dying.

Of course if I win one I could just do the other, but I guess I'm wondering which of the two would be better. I know there's one Act 2 quest that's a gimmie for the OL to win (the Heart quest, forget the name), but I would rather go for a more challenging quest.

Any thoughts?

I 100% respect you wanting the challenge! My heroes where confused when I didn't take Heart of the Wild because it was an easy win for me.

Also, congrats on winning Web of Power. I lost by a turn and a half. Had I had one more turn, Ariad would have been queen, but I am glad she remained ranged. There are pros and cons for her either way.

A little insight, Fire and Brimstone is a very hard quest to win for the OL. Don't take that one unless you have a sure fire way of winning or coming close to it. My heroes almost took that quest knowing I would most likely lose, but didn't for a chance at Tipping the Scales.

Speaking of Tipping the Scales, let me challenge you in another way. You are winning and you have your heroes by the neck, as in you lead them as you need them to go. They are also limited in money by where you lead them, which is very important for act two. Tipping the Scales offers you an experience if you win, which you now have a HUGE spider as Ariad to play with your heroes. If my heroes didn't pick Tipping the Scales I would have.

In the end, it is your choice. ^.^ You did much better in the campaign then I did. Congrats!

Aww, Nanok. I love him and his inability to see monsters running away. I will miss him, despite his black dice.

We ended up playing to before I saw your response.

We went with Fire and Brimstone. I think my heroes are way too under developed weapon wise. Because I was able to keep them gold starved, 3 of them are using Act 1 weapons, 1 is still using his starting weapon. They can still do some decent damage if they roll/plan right, but its easy to off set them.

Their team is

Nanok as a Beastmaster - Halberd as his equipment. Uses his wolf to blow up monsters left and right, but depletes his fatigue too quickly, along with Changing Skins he can do some decent damage. Love to pick on him with Blinding Speed and after he uses his Heroic Feat he drops pretty quick.

Lindel as a Treasure Hunter - With a Crossbow, Flash Powder, Obsidian Scalemail (Their first Act 2 purchase). There's one skill that gives him free Pierce 2 if he has an exotic weapon, so with the Crossbow he has a base of Pierce 3. Until he got the Obsidian Scalemail, him and Avric were priority targets simply because they were so squishy.

Astarra as a Hexer - Magma Blast, Rune Plate and Mana Weave. She's their tank effectively. 12 health, Gray + Black and some good mobility, she's hard to keep pinned and keep her down.

Avric as a Apothecary - Smoking Vials, Thief's Vest, Iron Shield. They really neglected giving him much equipment, which I think may have been one of their biggest downfalls. Reliable heals, but really squishy. He usually gets Fatigue starved pretty early.

I was able to swarm them off the bat with Zombies/Elementals and I used Hellhounds as my open group. 4 Fire Breaths + Pierce is really good for a tight group of webbed heroes. Poor Serena backed up a space to use Soothing Spirit to give the heroes a hand. Too bad she stepped right on a Web Trap and caught everyone but Lindel and Nanok. Afterwards it was pretty easy to roast them all.

Anyways. Yeah they never got past the Iron Door. They cleaned out the Hell Hounds, but not before 2-3 of them went down. After a few more Fire attacks from the elementals along with some well played cards (Blood Rage + Rise Again / Web Trap + Befuddle/Wicked Laughter) the whole team was down and after that they gave up.

Unfortunately, now that this is the 3rd quest where they got gold starved and they used all their gold for that Obsidian Scalemail, they feel there's no way they can pick up momentum again and get back to even footing with me. I'm thinking of playing a more Hero biased quest to help even the odds and that it would hopefully lead to a more epic Finale, because at this point it feels like it'll be over quickly and painfully. If anyone can point to a more hero biased quest out of the remaining Act 2 quest that would be great (We've played Web of Power and Fire and Brimstone so far)

One thing we've pulled out of this campaign though is that the CK heroes and monsters throw the whole balance system out of whack. For as many good heroes that you get with the CK you can get even more crazy monsters from the CK. I think we'll try the next campaign with no CK and see how it goes.

Hmmm... We only played Web of Power, Tipping the Scales and Let the Truth be Buried. I won the later two fairly easily, but Let the Truth be Buried can be won easily by the heroes if they win encounter one, I think. Splig is much closer for them to chat with. And spiders are easier to kill when close. Fountain of Insight also looks more geared for the heroes. Both quest offer opportunity for gold as well.

This one is your call. I am impressed with your awesomeness in your campaign. Play some crappy monsters? Help the carve a little?
