Wondering if those in the community have thoughts on the future of current expansions becoming out of print. as with most other long living popular tabletop games like warhammer for example sooner or later the original minis get upgraded or stop being made period. older oop sets become worth more and harder to acquire. personally i can't see ffg discontenueing xwings or ties but i could see maybe diifferent minis. pilot cards have more of a chance to beome oop or hard to get if they start to change the cards that come with the wave reprints. the promo cards are already becoming harder to find with a decent price. thoughts?
future outlook on oop expansions
Had we had any hint of a rumor of a whim of an idea that they will go OOP while the game is sill being produced?
FFG is not GW.
Yeah, that seems to go against FFG's business model. If they haven't stopped printing AGOT cycles, I doubt they will stop printing X-wing stuff. Ideally, we will get to a point where reprints will become less necessary.
From what I've heard, FFG is trying really hard to get ships out to players that want them, and have no plans to stop print on any of them. What holds up production a lot of the time is the quality they strive for. A few months ago, I heard they had to throw out an entire wave of reprints because they didn't meet their high standards.
Do you think the blockade runner and transport will be limited release?
Agreed, GW hates money, free publicity, I suspect if they could sell games but not actually let anyone play them, they would. Their business model seems to be built on mental illness.
Nobody at FFG seems to be sitting around going "you know what I really hate? Money." so I suspect they'll keep cranking out X-Wing as long as they can. ![]()
Do you think the blockade runner and transport will be limited release?
No. FFG really doesn't like the scarcity model of gaming. Granted, they can't always predict demand perfectly, which causes shortages.
I suspect the (Extra) big ships will be somewhat scarce just because they probably won't crank them out in HUGE numbers, with a higher price point and more limited demand. But I don't think it's supposed to be any kind of limited release in terms of "buy it now or forever miss out."
No I think they will reprint everything for as long as the game is popular. It is possible that they fix/upgrade their production quality so the models are "better" somehow, but I dont suspect that it will cause any issue really. The pilot cards will likely not change, but it is possible and even likely that we will see new pilots for X-Wings or even the same pilot with a new ability that you can choose from, but I don't expect that means that any of the existing ones will go away. Promos (with alt art, not new rules) will likely not be reprinted, so I guess that is one area where it may become difficult to acquire them, but they aren't needed or different from a gameplay perspective, so its not an issue.
The biggest difference really is that this universe is well established and the ships/associated models won't change ever unless they completely re-do the original Trilogy which I dont really see ever happening.
Where as GW constantly changes the look/feel of their armies, and thus changes their models, meaning they discontinue stuff. Their universe is not as "set in stone" as Star Wars, so they change it with some regularity to meet what they think people want (which is often misguided).
FFG has stated in the past that they have no intention of ever doing anything to make models rare or hard to find. So as long as they are producing anything for X-Wing, you'll see reprints of older ships as needed.
I'm sure they're not happy about the fact that the wave 1 ships (excluding the starter set) are so scarce, because (unlike GW) they want people to be able to discover the game and go pick up the stuff they want and join the community at any time.
From the talks I have had with actual FFG employees at GenCon they do not believe in stopping print of anything still in demand. Just one of the many reasons I love FFG and why they are the success of gaming over the last several years.
Amen, brother. Even the guys at the Event Center here in town are super cool and helpful. I've had nothing but good experiences with FFG. I'm biased because they're local, but they generally seem to do business the right way.
My experience with someone like GW is mostly through some of their spin-off games like Space Hulk and Blood Bowl, and the absolute lack of active support behind some of those games is incredible. They actually tried to basically have the listings for all of their games removed from Boardgame Geek. They went and located where the biggest fans of their products congregated, and then tried to have all pictures, logos, titles, you name it, stripped from the internet like their products don't exist.
I mean there's looking after your intellectual property and copyrights, and then there's actively attacking the community most invested in your games.
Back to the topic;
There is no "OOP" in X-Wing, there is just a lack of stock.
That's not so much "back to the topic" as "I know this was already stated like three or four times in the posts up above, but now that the conversation has wandered I'm going to jump in and repeat it again for good measure." ![]()
this is semi-off topic but do u guys (al gals) think the release of the new starwars movies under disney might result in new expansions for x-wing in the future?
its clear the expanded universe is up for grabs with the release of the HWK-290. seems possible then they will go for something else unexpected eh?

Eh, I felt it needed putting in clear language as it was still being referenced. I'll concede the point however ![]()

There is no reason to believe our new Mouse Overlords will be any different than the previous regime. I think adding sequel trilogy ships won't be as bad as what they had Decipher do to their big game, SWCCG.
Maybe they will open a production plant in the USA to pad supplies.

hmm yes if there are new ships in the movies i suspect we might end up seeing them in x-wing.
I'm really glad FFG isn't anything like GW. In fact I have a whole bunch of space marine stuff collecting dust in my closet if anyone is interested.
My Barnes & Noble Bookseller has Wave 3 X- wing sets (Lambdas & TIE/Bombers) plus Wave 2 (YT-1300 & Firesprays) and LOTS!!! of Wave TIE/Lns & 1 X-wings!!! If you are looking for Wave 1, check out Barnes & Noble.
Chris
I cleaned out my local B&N of its 2 X-Wings, 1 Y-Wing, and TIE Adv.
I cleaned out my local B&N of its 2 X-Wings, 1 Y-Wing, and TIE Adv.
my LGS only has 2 intercepters, 4 a-wings and a selection of large based ships. bombers, b-wings, x-wings and tie-fighter expansions are long gone.
Hmmnn well i wasnt really talking about current stock levels. more like the future of x wing like 5 to 10 years from now.
