Questions about Starships

By Lautrer, in Game Masters

Hallo SW Community.

First, sorry for errors in spelling or/and grammar. My mother lang. is german.

Now that I'm preparing my 2nd session gamemasterin Star Wars. I got some questions.

1. What exactly does Consumables mean in the Starship stats? Is it food and water, air refresh system or both?

2. It seems I have to read the Star Ship Section again but I missed reading something about the generators in starships. Where does the energy for engines, weapons, shields etc. come from and how much more system can be supported until you need a more powerful reactor for the ship. I'm asking cause I was used to plan with ship-energy-reactors playing/gming Traveller and Alternity RPG.

3. Are there rules or guidelines to calculate news ship models and the cost for such things?

Thanks for Your answers.

Hi there!

1) Yes. It's fuel, food, water, power, air and so on. It's for how long the ship can go without refuelling.

2) Strictly speaking, you could argue that the Customisation Hard Points are the extra power the ship has. Hard Points represent how much you can modify and add to the starship. This game is hardly comparable to Traveller when it comes to details, complexity and stuff like that.

3) There are no rules for making you own starship as of now, but this system is slightly less complex when it comes to these matters, so its easier to do oneself. There are however a few of us who have converted starships from earlier version of the Star Wars RPG. If you look at the Equipment Lab over at the GSA you will find a bunch of ships, there is also my Free-traders and Freebooters Catalogue , which also contains some gear, weapons and other sundry items, and a whole bunch of starships.

Thank You Jegergryte,

I've downloaded Catalogue, it's great! So I got a guideline how much a ship will cost with those many in your catalogue. ;)

And it makes sense that Hard Points are not only the surface area of the ship (and weapons etc.) where you can build in new devices but also free energy reserves.

I like the different approach to vehicle design compared to traveller. So it's easy work to generate a whole ship in a few minutes with all stats while in traveller or alternity you need about 2 hours.

For a good source about information about the starships either look in earlier Star Wars RPGs or Wookiepedia.org - there might be some Essential Guide to Vehicles and Starships out there too.

Thanks. wookipedia is in my favorite linklist since EotE arrived. :)

And I got two SW books from a friend "Smuggler's Guide" (d6) and Arms and" Equipment Guide" (d20).

Well these sources will have cost for each ship, so if you're converting you will have a guideline there.

When making up your own ship, from scratch, consider existing ships, compare the vital stats and increase or decrease as you deem necessary - also, while not a specified variable in this game, earlier Star Wars RPGs had two different prices for starships listed, used and new. So I suggest newer ships to be more expensive (of top of the line model type of stuff), or cheaper (mass produced versions of older or other vehicles).

A Jag said, it's a rough combination of everything. Just a suggestion though: dont' take this too literally. For the most part this is just a fun-fact to cover why it would be strange to encounter a flight of TIE fighters six weeksinto deep space.

If you're doing something where it makes sense for the players to need to keep an eye on this (like if the campaign is centered around a deep space exploration theme) then it's ok to do a reasonable amount of tracking. The rest of the time just assume the player characters have an unmentioned expense account that covers basic costs like restocking and refueling whenever they land at a civilized spaceport.

Remember, it's Star Wars, you never see Chewie and Han standing around at the pump complaining about gas prices.

Even Lone Star only took enough for Lunch, Gas, and Tolls!

You could also treat Consumables like ammo for ranged weapons without the Limited Ammo stat -- don't worry about it unless a Despair is rolled. :D (Or, as said, the story would make "constant resupply" implausible, in which case the Consumables stat sets the boundaries of plausibility.)
