Do Howlrunner and Capt. Jonus belong in the same squad?

Do Howlrunner and Capt. Jonus belong in the same squad?

Both have the ability to boost friendly ships attacks with rerolls (primary weapon attacks for howlrunner, secondary weapon attacks for Jonus) but can they coexist in the same squad?

There's no question that Howlrunner could benefit the same ships that Jonus does BUT that requires them to not be using Jonus. There are also those issues of spacing as you'd now want two ships in close to boost a bigger group. When you use Jonus you want to make sure you USE him and if you're not firing secondaries then he is just a higher PL T/B. Howlrunner maybe able to help everyone but that's most likely only after the bombers have fired their torps/missiles.

I have had some success with using both, but I am not convinced Howlrunner is points well spent in this case. She is best when you're in the first couple of rounds of combat and your formation is tight - eventually things get a little scattered, and by the time your ordinance is shot how likely will you still have your ships in formation well enough for her to pay off? The movement dials make it that much harder since the bomber's is not as forgiving.

The best I've come up with so far:

  • Captain Jonus (22)
  • Howlrunner (18)
  • Scimitar + Cluster Missiles (20)
  • Scimitar + Concussion Missile (20)
  • Scimitar + Cluster Missiles (20)

i guess the plan with running both is the same squad is ur missile carriers have a better late game punch with Holwrunner in play after they've fired their missiles.

heres a sample 100pt squad:

Howlrunner (18)

Backstabber (16)

Capt Jonus + Squad Leader (24)

Scimitar Sqd Pilots + Assault Missiles (21)

Scimitar Sqd Pilots + Assault Missiles (21)

thoughts?

The only reason I could see it better on Howlrunner is if sbe will be more likely to need her own action...

Edit: in looking deeper, I would probably be interested in dropping Backstabber to a nameless Mook and give Howlrunner Swarm Tactics, leaving Jonus with SL.

Edit 2:

"Howlrunner" — TIE Fighter 18

Swarm Tactics 2

Captain Jonus — TIE Bomber 22

Squad Leader 2

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 16

Assault Missiles 5

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 16

Assault Missiles 5

Black Squadron Pilot — TIE Fighter 14

Thanx Rraahk, ur build is virtually the same as mine with some minor tweaks. i really torn with those last 14pts, perhaps a straight academy and a 2pt seismic charge on Jonus? i think the basic theme is the same tho - early alpha strike with better mid-end game than traditional straight bomber squads.

lets keep the basic shell of the squad intact...

Captain Jonus — TIE Bomber 22
Squad Leader 2

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 16
Assault Missiles 5

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 16
Assault Missiles 5

...32pts left, i wonder what else could we fill out this squad with that would add to its longer game win percentage?

My thought would be to try putting another threat on the board to distract, so that the opponent has to choose between things they want to focus fire on - the things that can work them over early, or the end-game threats after the bomber ordinance is away. Something like:

Group 1:

Captain Jonus — TIE Bomber 22
Squad Leader 2

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 16
Assault Missiles 5

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 16
Cluster Missiles 4

Group 2:

Mauler Mithel — TIE Fighter 17

Backstabber — TIE Fighter 16

(or keep your original Assault Missles and switch Mauler out for Dark Curse to keep the higher PS and add staying power)

I posted very similar squads on the bomber threads. I think you need to decide if you're a bomber list with fighter support (and therefore Jonus fits) or if you're a tieswarm that happens to carry missiles. I'm not sure they can co-exist at a total of 40pts. They don't do anything especially well by themselves. That makes it really hard to justify 40pts of support.

I think tie swarm that happens to have missiles (choose homing and or concussion) is the better of the 2 builds.

No, they absolutely do NOT belong in the same squadron.

Captain Jonus was part of Scimitar squadron. Civé Rashon, better known by her callsign "Howlrunner," was the leader of Obsidian squadron, a completely different unit.

(You have to read the preceding in the voice of the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons for the full effect)
