Spent XP vs Ranks

By Mereghost, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Hi folks,

Last week my players (after an awful Peril of the warp roll by the psyker) if the XP spent to remove Insanity would count toward character advancement.

I'm kinda divided in that. I should count as it's spent XP, OTOH I think it's not really fair since their abilities didn't increase (in other words, they didn't buy any skills, talents or stat advances).

Is there any official position on this?

Nothing official yet.

Having insanity points is supposed to suck. Sure they can spend the XP to get rid of them but that means they dont get any skills or talents as they level up. Since characters dont get much stronger after creation you have to spend you xp on skills and tallents to even that out. The fewer skills and tallents you have the less effective your character becomes. Which is why gaining insanity points should be avoided at all cost.

So let them advance and laugh inwardly because you know things just got a bit more difficult for them. Sorry, I'm the evil GM.

I do not allow xp spent on removing insanity points to count towards character advancement, however, I am running a Space Marines game, wherein it costs 2xp to remove an insanity point, not 100. I would probably be more lenient with the DH rules as 100xp is a lot of xp for 1 IP.

That's the point.

Seeing as how background packages don't count towards advances I wouldn't have XP spent towards removal of IP count either.

whoa whoa whoa.... Hold it a second...

Background packages don't count towards rank advancement? I posted someplace with that very question and was told that they do.

Just want to clarify... does the xp count or not?

No. It specifically says so in the Inquisitor's Handbook. I can't give a page reference at the moment, as my books aren't to hand (they're currently secure in my bag for tomorrow night's session).

Hmmm. Nice to see some opinions. =) I'll make it not count.

As N0-1 says, it does not count. Check out page 26, bottom left of the page, in Inquisitor's Handbook, under " Using Background Packages "

I don't see a reason to not let them count, balancewise. Removing insanity is generally already a "weaker" option compared to many skills and talents you could buy otherwise - if you don't allow them to move on to the higher ranks, I can see the PCs starting to fall behind their fellows who don't care about their insanity.

Sure. They'll be weaker, but they'll be sane. The insane higher ranks will have to deal with madness. Not that someone is nearing the mental disorder level (Insanity 40+) but they asked me and I was like: "Huh? Good question." :P

The most insane of them all, is the, not suprisingly, psyker with 14 Insanity points over a couple of sessions. (He started the game already with some of these)

Considering that Insanity even wards against Fear (and Fear 1 is rather common) and you merely lose one insanity point for 100XP although they are often given out in 1D5 or 1D10 increments, I think it's fairly save to state that most talents you can get for 100XP are far more powerful.
