New player looking for advice on 1st Squad lists

By Alphadork, in X-Wing

Hey All,

I was down at the LGS for a Warmachine tourney that was taking place at the same time as a Star Wars X-Wing demo.

I played a couple of games during a bye round and was instantly hooked.

I ended up purchasing most of the X-Wing product currently on the store shelves (Basic Game, the Falcon, B-Wing, A-Wing, Slave 1, Lamda Shuttle, extra Tie Fighter, Tie Bomber and two Tie Interceptors).

Below are the Rebel and Imperial squads I'm planning to start with based on my current model selection (must find Wedge soon!!)

Rebel Squadron

42 – Ten Numb (31) + Autoblaster (5) + Marksmanship (3) + Advanced Sensors (3)

29 - Biggs (25) + Shield Upgrade (4)

29 – Tycho Celchu (26) + Push the Limit (3)

100 pts

The “plan” is that Biggs protects the Ten Numb firing platform from the opposing alpha strike while Celchu presses forward to muck up their approach

Imperial Squadron

20 - Howlrunner (18) +Swarm Tactics (2)

26 - Turr Phennir (25) + Veteran Instincts (1)

29 - Soontir Fell (27) + Elusiveness (2)

12 - Academy Pilot

12 – Academy Pilot

99pts

My take on an Imperial swarm list.

Do the above squads look viable/fun?

Thanks in advance for any advice/input.

Those look pretty good. I usually see Soontir Fel with Push the Limit (which allows you to get 2 Focus and 1 Evade instead of waiting for Elusiveness, or to use Barrel Roll and Boost to get into position). I like running R2-D2 with Biggs. With careful positioning, you can soak damage and heal it, but I'm not sure where you would want to make up those 4 points in the list if you are interested in keeping Ten Numb tricked out.

Welcome to the game :) You'll find it a bit cheeper then Warmachine, but perhaps more adicting.

I agree R2-D2 might be a better option with Biggs. For the same points you can regen shileds.

Also as Toggle said, Soontir is better with PtL then anything else. I'd drop Swarm Tactics and VI to give him PtL. Even though you only own 1 card, most people aren't going to have an issue with a proxie.

But with that said, you have nice solid lists there.

A few links and other semi-random info.

http://x-wing.voidstate.com/build is a great squad builder, but does have a few techinal issues right now becuse the guy who made it is backpacking across the world.

http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/ another good squad builder.

http://www.themetalbikini.com/ is a X-Wing blog that has a lot of good info.

Don't buy any more Interceptors, the Imperial Aces pack is coming out this winter... http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=4357

Wave 1 reprints should be in stores soon, they're set for Q4 so do not pay more then retail for anything.

Best bang for the buck, is a 2nd core set. You get 1 more X, 2 more TF, extra dice and templates. Just about everyone who plays recomends getting a 2nd core because it's such a great value.

Thanks for the replies - I really like the suggestion of PtL on Soontir - will switch to that.

I also like the idea of R2 D2 plus the Shield Upgrade for Biggs and would make the switch if anyone has an idea for a 3rd ship for that squad (would have to be an A-Wing with my current models)

Could go with Green Squad Pilot + PtL, not as good as Tyhco with it, but still works more or less the same way.

I don't know that Autoblaster + Marksmanship is a good idea.

Autoblaster makes it so [hit] can't be canceled by dice, but [crits] still can. Marksmanship changes a [eye] to a [crit]. That means the defender can acutally remove more "hits" then if you used focus, because Marksmanship increases the odds of having [crits]. Now of course you could just use focus rather the marksmanship when using the autoblaster... But if it were me I'd pick one or the other.

But looking at your list, and what ships you own, I don't see a much better way to spend those points. Short of dropping autoblaster and giving the A-Wing a missile.

Edit: I realize that Ten makes it so 1 [crit] can't be cancled, but that doesn't change what I said above, with Autoblaster you don't really want [crits]

@VanorDM - Fair points - I thought that Marksmanship was a good way to get that mix of one crit (that can't be cancelled because of Ten Numb) and regular hits (that can't be cancelled if I use the Autoblaster)

I'm also working on a tricked out Krassis Treelix with HLC and a close range option paired with Captain Jonus - just having trouble on that 3rd ship (sorta like my Rebel squadron)

I've also read about the "Han Shoots First" lists but haven't found one to reference - if anyone has an HSF squad that works for them would love to see it.

@Alphadork.

Yes Marksmanship can work for that. But if you roll a [hit] [crit] [eye] you now have 2 crits, one of which can be canceled. It's not going to happen like that every time. But you still run the risk, something that won't happen if you use focus.

Here's the most common HSF list.

Han Solo, Marksmanship, Gunner, Chewbacca (crew)

Marksmanship works better then focus, because it counts for all attacks from Han, including the one from gunner. A focus only works for one attack.

For the Imp list, 2 Academy pilots might work depending on how many points you have left. At 12 points per ship you can add 2 to most lists without too much trouble.

Han Solo w/ Chewbacca, Gunner, and Marksmanship

This is the traditional build, that lets Han basically roll 4 times to try to hurt you, has Chewie to give Hane 2-3 (depending on the discarded crit) more HP, and deals loads of damage

Han Solo w/ Chewbacca, Flight Instructor, Marksmanship, and Melinnium Falcon Title

Rookie Pilot

This is my more defensive take on the build, since Han's pilot ability lets him re-roll I replaced Gunner with a Flight Instructor for defensive re-rolls and the ability to take the evade token if he thinks he's gonna get pounded that turn.

Wanted to comment on what a friendly and helpful community this is; it certainly makes a new-comer like myself feel welcome!

I managed to grab a HWK last night and have tweaked my rebel list as follows:

40 – Ibtisam (28) + Heavy Laser Cannon (7) + Push the Limit (3) + Fire Control Sensors (2)

29 - Biggs (25) + Shield Upgrade (4) or R2 D2 (4) - I really can't decide which is better

31 – Jan Ors (25) + Ion Cannon Turret (5) + Nien Numb (1)

The basic plan is similar - Biggs protects the Ibtisam firing platform while Jan hands out the re-roll and tries to delay enemy ships with the Ion Cannon.

Once I track down that lone X-Wing I want to try a similar build with Wedge in place of Ibtisam and both R2 D2 and the Shield Upgrade on Biggs.

Jan hands out the re-roll and tries to delay enemy ships with the Ion Cannon.

Looks like a good list. But Jan hands out extra dice, not re-rolls. So in the case of Ibtisam and the HLC she'd* actually roll 5 dice.

*Ibtisam is actually a female Mon Calamari

You should at least try out a homing missile on your A wing or an advanced proton torpedo on your B-wing for the experience.
