Noob questions (legality mostly)

By Ashtad, in UFS General Discussion

Hi !

I just organized a sealed event in my store (taking benefits from the 3rd year promotion, which was awesome) and we now have a few players that may pick up the game.

I have a few questions though, mainly about cards legality in tournament play.

We may not play competitively, but I'd rather invest in cards that are going to be legal for a little time, and so I'm wondering which cards are legal until when. Basically, I know the current format is block 3, which cards are block 3 legal, but I can't find when block 3 stops and which cards won't be legal anymore at that point.

Other questions :

-UFS seems to be a not too expensive game (considering expansion size and singles price on the web). Am I mistaken (I'd rather not invest too much in too many games, and my main card game is still L5R) ?

-We're playing the second part of the 3rd year event, which is the constructed one. We're only going to use Domination and Cutting Edge. I'm planning to run Fire Sagat. Does that seem like a good choice ?

Thanks by advance.

HI! and welcome!

the cards from set 8 which you used in the anniversary event began block 2 (3 pt shuriken) - and will be legal until the main set for block 5 releases in 2010. each main set lasts 2 years after release. the cards that will release in set 12 will be legal through 2011.

you aren't mistaken - while there are expensive and hard to find cards, the price of them pales in comparison to some other games.

Sagat is a great contender due to his ability to search out pieces to fuel big hits. nice and aggressive. personally, i went with sakura and yoshitora, as their abilities are borderline ridiculous, especially sakura.

enjoy the game gran_risa.gif

ed: thanks verm

Addendum: By set 5 in 2010, you mean BASE SET(s) 5 which will be more like release 16, right?

basically don't buy stuff printed before domination and cuttin edge if you're worred about legality. Everything before those two sets are, and have already, 'rotated'.

Just look for the shurukin water marks in the background on text of cards. look for 4 pointed ones and soon to be released 5 pointed ones.

Game on. NASH OUT!

You are saying Block 2 (3pt shuriken) is legal until 2010? i thought it rotated in 2009....

Or i am totally misreading what you are saying

Ok.... lets get this all in one shot:

Cards with no water mark have rotated out of the standard format, and are only legal for Legacy tournaments.

Cards with a three pointed watermark are legal for standard play through April 8th. After April 8th you will still be able to use them in Legacy tournaments.

Cards with a 4 pointed watermark are legal in standard play, and will continue to be legal through spring 2010. Afterwards you will be able to continue to use them in legacy format events.

Cards with a 5 pointed watermark will be released on April the 8th 2009 for the first time. They will be in the card pool through spring 2011. At which time they will still continue to be legal in legacy format events.

Block 2 is an unofficial name, referencing the "2nd block of standard cards." Block 3 is an unofficial name as well, that represents "the 3rd block of standard cards."
