Personally, I'd rather move far, far away from the combat tank Techpriest of 1e. So Sage does the job brilliantly for me

While there might be Techpriests where the Sage role fits perfectly for, there are also plenty more toughness/combat oriented where neither the Sage nor the Warrior role really fits.
It's a concept that was only really supported by DH1e's poorly constructed advance tables, honestly. There's not a lot of fluff support for Techpriests with a major combat AND tech role.
I mean, people often raise Secutors as an example, but to them, tinkering with technology is secondary. They dedicate themselves to the art of combat, and as such would probably be more suited for a Warrior role. Same deal with the Skitarii, really. The Cult Mechanicus doesn't really support people deviating from their assigned roles, and I fail to see why the AdMech would assign someone the role of playing a technologically savvy bullet sponge. Much easier to have people wholly dedicated to either role.
Like Tom Cruise says, it's not really in line with the fluff at all.
Additionally, I'm not really seeing how reviving the DH1e monster brings anything positive to the system?
So do we need a craftsman role? If so how would it work with other backgrounds?
If we're going to talk about this let's at least use the proper terms. Roles and Backgrounds are entirely different things.
If a crafter / technician / mechanic (however you wanna call it) would be integrated, I think a role would make most sense.
An Adeptus Mechanicus Crafter could be a classical Techpriest (similar to DH1), while an Imperial Guard Crafter would be kind of military enginseer or mechanic/soldier/pilot-mix.
An Outcast Crafter could be something like a Reclaimator.
If you had an Imperial Navy background, you could even build something like the Void Master from Rogue Trader.
In the Imperium, you pretty much just don't have technicians who AREN'T from the Mechanicus. The ones that you do have aren't in the Imperium, because they're on the run due to being branded heretics.
I honestly don't see the need for this. Crafting has been removed from this edition wholesale, and the Mechanicus background covers your technician needs. What would the proposed role offer that others don't already?

I meant Background.
