Alternate deck building?

By MonEl327, in Star Wars: The Card Game

Hey all, question for you guys/girls -

How much would it wreck the game if I built decks like most other ccg's, basically one card at a time? In other words, what if I didn't use the Objective sets when deckbuilding, and just put in whatever cards I wanted? So I could have Luke, Vader, Boba, Leia, Yoda, and Ben in the same deck.

Would/could this type of deckbuilding work for this game?

Thanks!

I shudder to think how many copies of It's Worse become auto includes.

It would be a terrible idea. You would lose the balance created within each objective set and just stack the deck with power cards.

Wait... If you could build across sides I think I'd make an emperor trust your feelings deck. Toqtamish is right: without objective sets people would just play the rares. I like the fact that there will always be stormtroopers ( or other chuds) for Han and Luke to beat up on, or y-wings and snow speeders for the Empire to shoot down.

Should have specified, it's just me and my gf playing, and we just want to play for fun. We're not building decks for power gaming, or for any other reason than just to play and have fun, win or lose. We want to be able to use more of the cards in just a few decks, and be able to do cool stuff like I said above, luke/leia/vader in the same deck, etc.

So, between two people who could care less about rares, power cards, combos, etc...can it be done without wrecking the mechanics of the game?

They're your cards, you could do what you want, ultimately. Only things I'd consider is not mixing light and dark and putting a cap on how many copies of the same card are in a deck. otherwise, the game mechanics shouldn't be affected.

If you and your girlfriend want to build decks for use against each other while ignoring the objective set construction, then that's absolutely fine, and might even let you play some fun, offbeat decks you otherwise couldn't.

I would highly, highly suggest, however, that you not mix cards across the Light/Dark side of the Force. Aside from making opaque sleeves mandatory, this throws out the core assumptions of the game, including the win conditions of the game. Even if you were to arbitrarily declare one deck Dark and one deck Light, you still have the problem that certain cards are completely imbalanced due to the asymmetrical win conditions - most Imperial Navy Capital Ships, for example, are far more efficient at blast damage than what the Light Side can put out, and Superlaser Blast fulfills 1/3 of the Light Side's win condition.

Not to mention that in a thematic sense, under no circumstances should the Light Side player be in the business of destroying planets.

with 3 cores you could do it pretty easy you would have 3 of everything

Yeah, good points all. We're going to give it a shot and see how it works. Thanks for the advice!
