New Player Friendly List for 1st Local Play

By Rogue13Leader, in X-Wing

Hey Everyone!

I am a new player to X-Wing but a long time Star Wars fan. So far I have played a few team rounds with friends but never commanding a side by myself. Of course I started craving more and will be going to a local game store for some friendly play.

I've read a lot of posts and looked at a lot of lists and feel overwhelmed (and excited!) by the shear number of options. This is the first miniatures game of any sort I've ever played so I'm looking for a new player friendly list that is a little forgiving.

Here are a few of my criteria:

- Would prefer an Alliance list.

- Have at least one of every ship, multiple of Wave 2/3.

- Will probably face a mix of Alliance and Imperial fleets so don't want something specialized.

Thanks for all the input in advance!

Green Squadron A-wing with Squad Leader

Blue Squadron B-wing with Heavy Laser Cannon

Rookie Pilot with R2D2

Gold Squadron Y-Wing with Ion Cannon Turret and R2 Astromech

This comes in at 99 points to give you initiative

The point of the squad is to have the A-Wing provide support to your heavy hitters while the Y-Wing creates sitting ducks. Blow them away with the B-Wing and X-Wing then continue.

This fits your build request in that it is competitive and ith has 4 different ships in it.

I would probably drop R2-D2 to give space for a Fire-Control System on the B.

welcome to the addiction :)

so u have one of every ship or u want all diff ships in ur list?

if u post up exactly what ships u have available it will make it easier to suggest squads :)

Sorry that if that wasn't clear. Here is what I have:

Rebels:

3 X-wing

1 Y-wing

3 B-wing

4 A-wing

1 YT-1300

1 HWK-290

Imperials:

5 Tie

3 Tie Interceptor

3 Tie Bomber

1 Firespray

1 Lambda Shuttle

I'm looking for a list that would be a little forgiving in terms of maneuvering and using. Doesn't matter to me whether it is a 3 X-wing list or 1 of each ship, just looking for a good starting point to get my feet wet :) .

When it comes to "forgiving" it is hard to beat the YT-1300 with either Han or Chewie as the pilot. Oh sure, the big base can be a little be harder to maneuver but if you do lose actions they are somewhat forgiving as the pilot abilities don't take actions. There is also the small matter of 360 degrees of firepower which certain makes "lining up" your shots easier and lets you attempt retribution against almost anyone who attacks you. Put a Gunner or Luke in it as well and you can now "shoot again" if your first attack misses.

Honestly, the "Han shoots first" variations really could be what you are looking for. The basis for it is simply Han Solo with a Gunner and perhaps other mods/upgrades which is normally paired with one or two other fighters. What's more is that what fighters you choose to use can vary.

Hi Rogue13, it depends what u prefer to play really. i agree HSF is pretty durable against everything, if u want something thats relatively simple to play and wont punish u for hitting the odd asteroid HSF is a good choice for rebels - your movements can even be less than perfect and that 360 firing arc on the falcon will do the rest.

ive had some success with these squads:

98pts

2x Academy Pilot (24)

1x Howlrunner+Swarm tactics (20)

1x Turr Phennir+Veteran Instincts (26)

1x Soontir Fell + Swarm Tactics (28)

lots of firepower and high pilot skills, swarm gives ur academy first strike versus most enemy ships.

99pts

1x Wedge + R2 Astromech + shield upgrade + Push The Limit (37)

1x Luke+R2D2+ shield upgrade + Draw Their Fire (37)

1x Biggs (25)

really fun squad. PTL on wedge could be just about anything else u like eg. Marksmanship or a shield upgrade

you have the models to make a solid B-Wing list as well, although im not qualified to suggest a squad (ive not long had my wave3 ships and am still tinkering)

my current squad-building project is to come up with a tie-bomber list. like u, i only have 3 bombers just now so im looking at something like...

Captain Jonus + Squad Leader (24)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot + Assault Missiles + Cluster MIssiles (25)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot + Assault Missiles (21)

Omicron Group Pilot + Anti-Persuit Lasers + Heavy Laser Cannon (30)

... still tinkering with this one. im not convinced the shuttle is worth it and might opt for a 4th bomber or possibly drop one of the scimitar pilots as well as the shuttle and go with a beefed up Bounty Hunter variant. something like...

Captain Jonus + Squad Leader (24)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot + Assault Missiles + Cluster Missiles (25)

Bounty Hunter + Assault Missiles + Slave1 Title + Adv. Proton Torpedoes + Heavy Laser Cannon (51)

... the theory here is the HLC teamed with Jonus will do the damage at long range and if they get close u have the threat of the adv. proton - if u focus fire you are going to hurt them... would be nice to find some room for a mine or two but i have a feeling they r only worth it on higher pilot skill pilots.

I would like to point out there are 5 Rebel pilots with a skill of 6, and it is really hard to go wrong with any of them.

This lets you move as a group and attack as a group, letting you decide the order in which you move, so you don't run into yourself :)

Also, Garven Dreis and "Dutch" Vander on the X and Y are the oldest super-combo in the game. Dutch acquires a target lock for himself and for someone else (probably Garven). Garven shoots, uses both the target lock and the focus, giving the focus token to "Dutch" (or to someone else).

Among other things, you always know what action you're going to take with these two, and it is a powerful combo.

A newer variant of that fleet is to have Garven Dreis, Kyle Katarn (+Moldy Crow, +Recon Specialist), and Ibtisam (+Deadeye, +Lots of Torpedoes) all working together. You can pass Focus Tokens around like candy! If Kyle and/or Garven gives Ibtisam their focus token, then Ibtisam can barrel-roll into a better position to shoot her ordinance, and deal lots of damage. Alternatively, have Kyle give a focus to Garven, who gives it back to Kyle, and so the focus is never lost!

Just finished my first set of battles ever, thanks to everyone for the input! I ended up going with the following list:

Wedge Antilles (29):

- Engine Upgrade (4)

- Photon Torpedo (4)

Biggs Darklighter (25):

- R2-F2 (3)

Dutch Vander (23):

- R5-K6 (2)

- Proton Torpedo (4)

- Ion Cannon (5)

99Pts

First Battle:

Went up against Colonel Jendon, Captain Jonus and a Scimitar with the bombers fully loaded with concussions, clusters and some other missiles. Took out the Scimitar on the first pass with a proton from Dutch and shot from Wedge, while the other pilot was forced to do a regular attack on Biggs. Got a few missiles off later taking out Biggs but Wedge proceeded to wipe out the rest with Dutch passing him target locks and and shooting Ions.

Second Battle:

Against 2 B-wings with advanced sensors and Lando in the Falcon. Had some poor flying in the beginning and left Dutch open to a triple attack which took him down quickly. I was never able to get much synergy going with the whole group and eventually Biggs went down. Wedge fought on and with a few lucky defense rolls survived long enough to take out one of the B-wings and bring the falcon down to a few hull.

All in all had a really fun time playing and was happy that winning or losing everyone I played against was extremely helpful and nice. Personal things to work on:

1) Totally forgot actions or the droids I put on the ships some times.

2) Formation flying in tricky and pilot order is just as important in movement as it is in shooting. The second player was able to use the advanced sensors to pick an action then purposely collide with the Falcon, giving him excellent shots sometimes.
