If X-wing wasn't painted nicely, would you collect?

By Davor, in X-Wing

I was extremely excited to see the star wars miniatures brought back once again.. Only this time with extreme dedication to detail... As far as having a unique paint job ?....You cannot complain what-so-ever, compared with time , patience , painting and detailing each miniature...There are some that would gawk , complain , and jeer at the fact that they can do better...But the bottom line is that the overall majority are happy to open up a game box and play a game instead of closing their eyes and envision what their color-less pieces would look like...Never give up, Never surrender...

meekor, I can do better, but I still like the fact that they look good on a table with no changes. It's really nice to take out my painted models which I've spent hours slaving over and not end up against the grey and silver horde every week (occasionally with a black model where someone has got around to undercoating them).

Also I've never liked fielding unpainted models, so it's nice to be able to try out new models without having to wait a week until I've got the unit painted.

Lol there is no doubt in my mind that you have over-whelming talent in painting and detailing and creating ...I have literally thousands of minis that cry out in my sleep for the need to be painted...Not enough time in the day and am now coming to realize that age creeps up faster than you can imagine ... Never give up , Never surrender....

Remember if you ever finish your last models, you will keel over dead the next day.... FACT... So this is a good thing.

Hahahahaha ....There is esteem wisdom in that sentiment...That could very well explain why my collection keeps growing and growing lol...Not an obsession , just an overwhelming imagination for building scenarios that have a unique twist for a wargame setting...Never give up, Never surrender...

I'd have to say no. If the models for X-Wing were as bad as Attack Wing I would not play the game. In fact that's what's keeping me away from Attack Wing. The models for that game look like a toy you'd get from a McDonalds Happy Meal, not for a proper miniature game.

Hey now, that's an insult to McDonald's. I used to collect Happy Meal toys and let me tell you that those toys sadly have better paint jobs than Attack Wing.

I still got into Attack Wing anyway since it is a pretty good game, but I'm not as into it as I am in X-Wing.

I'm curious, does anyone know what the painting process is for these minis?

My friend thinks they are hand-painted, but I've seen hand-painted miniatures before many times on a mass scale and they are never this good, not at this price range.

There has to be some other process. Does anyone know how they pull it off?

Nope.

What actually brought me to the game was the Falcon. Once that model was being made, I was in. I have too much stuff now...

Yes, lots and lots of Chinese kids.

Ahahaha... j/k we've already had a thread on that and FF has confirmed that they have people going over to their manufacturing facilities to check that they treat their workers humanely.

They are probably hand painted in China by a facility that specializes in getting toys together and painted. They do it assembly line style with pieces in specifically marked tubs and individuals who only have one job such as; assembly of certain parts, apply basecoat, apply washes, apply tampoed graphics(decals), painting color 1 of the canopies, painting color 2 of the canopies, etc.

They would get an order in, with parts, paint, and instructions on assembly order and painting order. They'd then assign workers to specific tasks in the assembly line.

That same factory and those same workers were probably assembling and painting Transformers or Barbies the month before.

Trust me, there's no such thing as a machine that can do this. It is impossible. Everything was done by hand with an army of labourers.

Just imagine your x-wing figures in place of the other toys shown in the following photographs.

I remember back when the Starship Combat Game was around that I was indifferent to it because the miniatures looked horrible. TIE Fighters with bent wings, X-wings with warped cannons, a Super Star Destroyer that looked like it had been through a washing machine . . . The paint jobs were nice, but the figures also looked like they had been molded out of silly putty, with no sharpness.

I never picked up the game to give it a try because the miniatures to me spoke of a company that didn't care about its product, and if the models are that bad, why should I expect the rules to be any better?

X-wing Miniatures Game inspired me to pick it up because it had this look about it that said, "The guys making this game really love Star Wars and are here to give us a great game, not make money off the name of the product."

So would I have bought it if they looked like crap? No, probably not, even if I had hear that it was great.

I think you said it there, man. I've picked up both X-wing and Attack Wing, and the game system is fantastic and I love playing both. That said, I'm bouncing in my chair waiting for the wave1 reprints and the imperial aces to hit the shelves, while at the same time completely bleh about any new stuff from AW. X-wing's consistently high product quality in the minis, the cards, all of the set pieces and expansions really give that feel that FFG cares about the product and franchise in a way that the AW game does not.

...come to think of it, another thing I seem to find more comfortable with Xwing is that the fighters, and pilots, all seem to exist within a relatively modest and concise timeline with one another.. Some of the matchups one can build would be unlikely within the canon, but not out of plausible reach. Whereas the ships and crews being featured in AW are brought together from widely disparate parts of the Trek timeline (upwards of a century, if one is invested in the mythos). There's just something about fielding the Enterprise -1701 with 60's era Kirk against Martok's Negh'var (Or Picard in the Ent-D with the Reliant under Tyrell on his wing, for that matter. x.x) that is.. offputting is the only way I can describe it, while X-wing just stirs up all the same feelings of joy I got dogfighting my way through the LucasArts X-wing and Tie Fighter PC games..(Keyan Farlander card? Assault gunboats? Z-95s? Heck, a Rogue Squadron pack to counterpoint the imperial aces would be awesome)

My main requirements for games like this are 1. great looking models and 2. decent to nice paint job.

Thankfully X-Wing fulfills and exceeds these. :)

I think that there would be a market for both painted and unpainted models.

Initially I bought the game because it was Star Wars and looked quite good fun.

The quality of the paint job didn't bother me as I have the equipment and dare I say ability to paint them myself to a decent standard. As it turned out the paint job was pretty **** good, so I have only added a few individual touches so that I can differentiate between multiple fighters of the same type (red/yellow noses to x-wings; coloured hatches on the ties; etc).

If I had a choice I would probably prefer to be able to buy a fighter as a 'blank' so that I could do a complete paint job without the trials of stripping off the prepaint.

Having nice pre-painted miniatures certainly ticked one of my requirements. Although I love the idea of painting my miniatures and despite my continued efforts to do so with my 40k and Blood Bowl miniatures...quite simply I suck at it...I pull off what I consider a fairly ok paint job and then I see some of the works of art that other people turn their miniatures into and I go slinking back to my hole, clutching my paint spludged miniature and overwhelmed with feelings of resentment and jealousy.

Also to be honest I just don't have the time to invest in painting that much, so yeh the fact that the X-wing miniatures come pre-painted and to a pretty **** decent quality is whopping bonus for me.

If were not painted at ALL, maybe. If it was a whole "assemble and paint them yourself" hobby, I'd have been tempted.

If they were simply painted BADLY? No. Hell no.

Tbh neither are what I would describe as high quality, in fact to be brutally honest on closer inspection after having bought the ships of both systems I was disappointed with the x-wing offerings and equally more impressed with the attack wing offerings after all the negative nellies having their say I did expect worse. Saying that I still re-painted the trek ships as I simply felt I had to (will probably re-paint x-wing when I have the time), detail wise considering they represent much larger ships than the average x-wing detail is acceptable and with a little splash of colour and some lining they come up quite nicely http://www.tanksandtrolls.co.uk/otherfigurespage.htm

There seems to be a lot more inside the attack wing expansions too with every one for me being fun to open and check out unlike x wing which has become a little bit 'predictable' of course wether that carries through to the upcoming waves of AW is another matter, only time will tell!

All that said, nicely or badly painted minis didn't really influence me, some of my most enjoyable games have small wooden blocks as playing pieces!

As for the timeline spoiling play mentioned by a previous poster, I think it only adds to the excitement for me, some of the best trek stories have involved the team travelling in time and saving the universe!!!

Ugh X-wing is no pro paint job but every aspect of the minis are MILES ahead of Attack Wing. Don't believe the hype, kids.

To be fair, the X-wing timeline is wonky at best. It's more glaring in Trek, sure, but when is X-wing set? Half the Rebel pilots died at the first Death Star. A bunch of pilots presumably existed somewhere but didn't show up until Empire or Jedi. I'm sure you could dig into the EU and figure out this ship didn't exist until after that dude was killed, or whatever. Just nobody cares for whatever reason.

Probably not. The fantasy flight and star wars brand had me interested. Seeing how awesome they looked in person got me to buy in. I played the original star wars CCG in the early 90s, but other than that stayed away from most star wars gaming products. Other than a brief experience with saga edition. Its really the combination of great product with great IP made by a great company that got me to pick up a 2nd minis game. Hordes is my "serious" minis game and other than that and X-Wing I'm all board games with most of them coming from fantasy flight.

I would not!

1. I have painted 3 armys of Wh40k and im sic of it. I just want to play.

2. I have no number 2
