I Feel Dirty...

By CrookedWookie, in X-Wing

The tournament stuff is a Wiz Kids specialty. This goes back to the clix games and their standard play legal prizes. Yeah, no. I''' stick with alt art pilot cards and tokens, not advantages for being able to attend an even that others couldn't. Reading that card for the Elite die made me glad I decided not to play that game.

even if you attend a wiz kids attack wing event you may not get a dice as the kit only has 12 dice in it.

While I like both the idea of dice with different facings, especially with large ships coming out that will be equipped with powerful but comparably inaccurate weapons like a turbolaser, and "squad" upgrades I have to agree that even if it costs you points to use something that's only available to people that can take the time and money to go to events is awful. Sorry Star Trek, you've lost this round. Bleh.

FFG is already doing this, though through upgrades, concussion missile, adv protons, if you focus, you will hit. Changing the die is not the only way to affect hit probability =)

That is a pure accuracy increase. It doesn't boost damage potential so much as damage likelihood. It's an important difference. More important is the fact that the Trek "elite die" isn't an upgrade that comes with a ship or can be purchased seperatly on a whim. You have to be lucky enough to live in an area with an event and be able to attend or have a friend attend and give you their die. A concussion missile can be gained by grabbing any of the several expansions that include them. The worst case scenario is that you only want the one card and most of the money is wasted but that's you're choice and you can do it on a whim.

Wouldn't the purple dice would need some possible serious rule crafting?

What about re-rolls for TL or abilities like Jonus with the purple die? Does it get a special rule stating that it cannot be selectively re-rolled but is allowed by Han or gunner because they roll all?

Also, what happens when you use Opportunist, which die do you get to add, red or purple?

Who would not use the purple over a red in either of the above cases. Would you not consider that an issue?

I am sure there are other instances like these that I am just blanking on right now......

So you think an elite pilot talent that gives you one different die with slightly better odds is game breaking?

And telling players that they want you at regional events and giving incentive to come is bad as well?

Next thing I here will be the world championship prize isn't fair and everyone should have access to a set of movement templates that say "world champion".

You're playing this game because it is X-Wing and it's fun. Having a promo that barely increases your odds while only being able to go on select ships anyway isn't going to ruin the game. Yes, someone living in the middle of nowhere is going to have a hard time buying it on Ebay but honestly his points might have been better spent on a stealth device anyway.

Now if it was a ship or a pilot or a upgrade that did something more significant, then I would join you in complaining.

Except that those upgrade cards don't have sever game-altering abilities like having an "Elite" die will do. Someone mentioned earlier that you literally cannot miss with that die, and they are right.

I'm not against giving away special products at tournaments (movement tokens, target lock tokens, cards with alt art). What I am seriously against is giving away items that will be heads and shoulders above the rest of the play field, and be legal for a standard game at the LGS. Wizkids did this often, and I witnessed first-hand what it did the the local game scene. People simply stopped playing after a while, and the game died out. I asked what happened, and was told that the special game legal prize gave a player an unfair advantage at the local tournament level that was not really able to be overcome. So people simply moved back to 40k or other games.

I like X-Wing precisely because this is the opposite way things are done as above. I'd rather not imagine tournament prizes with ships with abilities far beyond the standard game. I think the list building aspect of the game, with all of its options is good enough.

To be fair the die upgrade might be perfectly balanced. I haven't crunched the numbers. And the core idea behind that kind of upgrade is pretty cool and I'd be happy if they worked it in. But a wider range of options is inherently an advantage. A bragging right prize like a "world champion" template is fine as long as it measures the same way and no reasonable human being would complain about someone winning that, not that most people are reasonable but I like to hold us Geeks to a slightly higher standard because I must love the taste of regret in my soul. But this is the same as if the only way to fly Luke was to attend Gencon and play in the official matches. I choose Luke here deliberately since he's a middle of the road, balanced pilot. He's not game breaking but the fact that someone has the option to field this harder to hit X-wing while you can't wouldn't be fair would it?

A bragging right prize like a "world champion" template is fine

I'm not sure. As a European, I have an issue with a World Champion which is selected almost exclusively from Americans that can get to Gencon :P

Next you will have a World Series that only has American teams.

Other countries play baseball?!?!?

Like I said, I would be upset about a unique pilot. I might be ok with a non-unique. Like others I have seen some annoying prizes given away that messed up a game, but as long as it isn't game breaking or a staple I don't see a problem with it.

If FFG made a die that had one more hit on it and it cost 6 or 5 to run it I wouldn't be bothered at all.

I think custom paint jobs would also be a cool prize for top of worlds.

Yeah the Japanese have a thriving Baseball culture, I'm a fan of the The Saitama Seibu Lions

We have Rounders over here in the UK, which is very like Baseball, but that is only really taught in girls' schools.

I got one of these at last months AW tournament, and decided not to use it at this months because it just didn't feel worth it for the points (seemed like I had to give up a lot for a dice I only got to roll once per round, and at least 1/2 of the AW ships don't have the focus action which means they could still miss 25% of the time as there are 2 focus on this dice). This months is later today and I'm curious to see how many people use it and with what effect.

Month 2 is actually better. It lets you take up to 5 free actions per game. You have to pick the 5 from among 10 options including free evade, free focus, roll extra dice, reroll all dice, free target lock. Prevent one hit with the free evade or focus, or get one more hit with the free focus or target lock and it paid for itself. If you are lucky enough to get the 5 you chose to work more than once, it is a real bargain.

So I've seen a lot of people use it and since you can only have one and you get to use it in only one roll per turn it isn't game breaking, particularly since that game is just full of attack dice anyway. The admiral pip resource in the next one could be even more powerful though, considering how often you have the chance to one-shot ships in there. I've still beaten people using it pretty handily, although it's made the moments where I was sure of my defensive strategy not so good. So I haven't used the die yet, mostly because it just feels taboo to me and like my win wouldn't be worth as much. Maybe I should get over it? But I'm really glad there isn't **** like this in X-wing.
