needing help for my first time

By grimhawk the wookie, in Game Masters

I am relatively new to the RPG scene. As such this is my first time GMing a game. I do plan on using published modules but I also want to create my own story. I have this idea about stealing a holocron from a star destroyer. Going inside the hangar fighting their way down to the storage facility, grabbing it, and then fighting their way back out. But as I begin to read what minion storm troopers could do, I begin to feel as if this is too much of a challenge for the first encounter.

I know im going to fall into some traps, I know that I'm going to screw things up every now and then ,nobody plays a good first game. If there's something that I'm not thinking of , I would love for someone to help .so if anybody has any ideas, hints , tips or tricks ,I would greatly appreciate your help.

Thank you for your time and understanding

PS always willing to meet a new friend and I do have Skype which is where we plan on playing . please send me a message if you wish to contact me.

I would probably try and steer a new GM away from something so large scale/epic til you have a good deal of working knowledge and experience. Work your way up to something like that.

Dont be afraid to edit stock modules to fit your party and stories.

If your adventure idea contains either the word Holocron or Star Destroyer it isn't appropriate as a first adventure. They are pretty epic things you throw at players during epic points in a campaign (think season finales).

Your idea is great for quite advanced characters, maybe ones on their way to being Jedi (who would need a Holocron) or big time scum and villainy who need the Holocron to settle a huge debt.

West End Games has an adventure, Starfall, where the characters need to escape from a crippled Star Destroyer with only a skeleton crew remaining.

For a first adventure, particularly for Edge of the Empire, your plot needs to be smaller, a more local affair. The characters are supposed to be small time smugglers and other star port scum.

You could adapt your plot so they are obliged to rescue someone from the local jail on a backwater planet. The opposition would be local law enforcement and maybe a posse of angry townsfolk! The someone could be a friend of theirs or they are hired to do it by a crime lord or family member of the prisoner.

The being they liberate could give them the second adventure.

Hope this is helpful and good luck with your first adventure.

Yeah, I ran an encounter with stormtrooper minion group of 4 and 1 rival trooper sergeant and it was a party wipe. The output damage of stormtroopers and their huge soak make them very tough.

Fortunately, it was a test encounter I ram just to explain the systems new dice mechanic so it didn't ruin anything but did show the players combat is for real.
