Need help making two non-competitive lists

By Mishgun2k, in X-Wing

I am looking for help with building 2 lists for my wife and I to play with each other. I am terrible at list building and worry that one list will be more powerful or unfair than other.

Please help me out.

Here is what I already own

2x Starter Set

Tie Fighter

3xTie Interceptor

3xBomber

Lambda shuttle

2x B wing

3x A wing

2x Hawk

I was thinking 100 points, but maybe on account of us being beginners we should do 50pts?

50 pt is easier for beginners, as beginners typically have piloting issues.

Moreover, try sticking with just X-Wings and Tie Fighters for the first, and then incorporate more ships as you get used to how the mechanics work :)

For your very first battle the core set has all you need and I think the rulebook has a few missions to set up with 1 X wing vs 2 TIE fighters. This is around the 33 point mark (from memory). The sides are better balanced at 100 points than 50 points so once you feel comfortable then it does not take much to make 100 point lists. The game is well balanced at this level.

I read you post, and I know what you are asking. But when I had just read the title of this thread, I thought wow are all the list this guy comes up with too competative. Maybe his friends won't play with him becasue he always beats them

We played a few starter games. A demo with basic rules and 3 missions using advanced rules.

You know, with those resources you could be Imperial and Rebel squadrons that would be PERFECTLY balanced against another squadron. Just build MIRROR squadrons!

Strangely, this may be easier with the rebels as you can make two identical squads using an X-Wing, A-Wing, B-Wing, and maybe in a HWK in each of them. You have one A-Wing sitting on the sideline but otherwise you could use your rebel ships to build two identical squadrons to go at each other. It would be easy to build four rebel ships to 100 points if that is what you want to do.

While you have a lot more Imperial ships you also have an odd number of most of them. Normally, that would not be an issue but here an "even" split would leave both sides with the T/F, a T/B, and one T/Int. With just four TIE fighters getting to 100 points is a little more difficult but you can have your mirror at just about any point level.

In either case just remember that BOTH sides can have the same "unique" pilots and upgrade. This means that Luke, Tycho, and Ten Numb could face off against their clones flying the exact same setup. With two identical lists certainly no one should be able to complain about the "powerful" list although you may be an education on how initiative works.

thats a good idea actually!

And to cooment on why exactly I have those ships - very limited local supply, so I buy what I can get my hands on :)

One set up I found alright was:

1 rookie pilot

1 red squadron pilot

vs

1 academy pilot

1 obsidion pilot

night beast

you have alternating pilot skills, to get used to moving in different orders, and 1 special tie which could be good but isn't great :D

When teaching my friends I use the ties, as you wont be able to kill an x wing in 1 salvo, while they could kill you in 1 salvo. Also the x wings have shields which help when using asteroids (as they can fly through and maybe lose a shield, while if the ties fly through they could get more seriously injured).

Yeah, when I saw the title of this thread I thought "dude, I can totally come up with an uncompetative squad for you!"

This is true and I agree. Play by the rules in the Rulebook. I think they start you out in some simple ships. Also, play the scenarios. Instead of "winning" a 100 or whatever point game you can show how to use tactics and get everyone involved without bushwhacking each other.

nurglz made a good point too.

Here's the lists I use when I do demos of X-Wing.

Rookie Pilot, R2 Astromech

Luke Skywalker

4 Academy Pilots

Yes Luke does have some special ablities, but I like having a few other options because it gives a better feel for how the more advanced game works.

I believe you need a Y-Wing to have the R2

Let your wife build her own list so she can enjoy the game more fully.

Didn't realize that, but yes your right.

Not that it matters really, no reason why the OP can't use a proxie for the R2.
