The ultimate play table

By Boomer_J, in X-Wing

I want to build a play table for cinematic play with diorama hanger bays on the Imperial and Rebel sides. You would star with your ships in the hanger bay. Any thoughts or suggestions on size and such? Discuss.

I think I would make the hanger dioramas removable for different scenarios. But they would cover the whole side of the factions start point.

If you do it according to the images there would be room to move the ships with no problems.

If they could be lit by LEDs or some other lighting source they would look awesome.

I think the ultimate table would also be a very large touch screen that you could place various asteroids, backgrounds - have moving / scrolling fields etc.... moving star destroyers in the background ... mmm

though your idea would be very awesome too :D

70" LED TV laid down with graphics on it...like the above poster said.....'kinda' expensive though! ;-)

i would say the ultimate table would be a to (x-wing) scale death star (well at least the side with the open hatch) :D

It would be nice to have a touch table that would allow the following.

Assigning ships, displaying cards, updating ship hull and shields

It would work like this

On the right side of the screen place each plastic mini ontop of its card on screen. It would register whatever is ontop is associated with that mini (so you would ahve to place them correctly)

While you were setting up, as you pick up the piece it would know which one you are moving since it was just picked up.Setup would take a little longer since you could only do one at a time instead of placing them everwhere but it wouldn't be too bad.

You would still use dials but place the dial face down ontop of the digital card. When it is that ships turn to move, a box with all movement appears on the screen, choose the selected movement and it instantly knows where to place the template via ship placement.

It will have the starting/end positions with a box at the end of the template where your ship should go. If it collides or backs up, it will adjust where the ship goes automatically so all you have to do is place the ship. Also failed maneuvers will be red instead of normal chosen color.

When it is time for your action another popup shows your available actions, you press one and it floats over hovering near the base of your ship. Critical and other effects do the same.

When it is time to shoot, all ships in your arc light up around their bases with a red circle, a number floats around the ships indicating range.

As ships are destroyed, a part of the table will have a time/point counter on each side showing you updated scoring.

I always wanted to work with the AR frameworks to make a system that would track ships on the board and project firing arcs and movement template and final position using an overhead projector. No need for a TV that large a projector would be more flexible and much cheaper.
