Just got my shuttle today and was wondering about HLC. It is an expensive upgrade, and it forces you to turn crits into regular hits.
Am I missing something? Is this actually good ?

At range 2 you get 4 dice to attack. At range 3 you get 4 dice AND the defender does not get an extra defence die. As we get more ships we may see ships getting cannons that don't already have 3 primary attack dice. Crits aren't everything.
4 attack dice at range 3 with no bonus defensive dice for the opponent (because it is a secondary weapon) that doesn't require a target lock or require you to discard after using it is pretty solid. Pairing it with the Mercenary Copilot lets you turn one of those hits back into a crit or Jonus who lets you reroll up to 2 attack dice for secondary weapons if he is in range are good options.
And rerolls don't get converted to hits, only the original dice.
I see now...okay thank you very much.
I was going to put a blaster turret and recon specialist on my Lambda. But now I think I will keeo the HLC
A Lambda can't take a turret upgrade. Your only choices are the HLC or the ion cannon. (I think)
you can also put an autoblaster on it... but that would just be silly.
And rerolls don't get converted to hits, only the original dice.
What? You can crit on re-rolls? Where is that written? I would love to use that!!
It's on the last page of the current FAQ, top question on the right hand column.

It's in the FAQ, though it's a little awkward:
Does that include Target Locks expended to reroll? Wow, can't believe I missed this!!
Because it makes an earth-shattering Ka-Boom ~,~

It's in the FAQ, though it's a little awkward:
Q: If a ship attacks with Heavy Laser Cannon, can it modify attack dice to get a [critical hit] result?A: Yes. All [critical hit] results on attack dice are immediatelychanged to [hit] results after they are first rolled, andthen the dice may be modified as normal.
wow. good intel. so u can still potentially do two crits with a HLC supported by Jonus right? Scary.
it also allows you to use target lock to reroll any number of dice and potentially get all crits. Ouch.
Of course u can only reroll each dice once but thats still some pretty nifty rerolling action.
While rerolling could get you crits I hope most people would be happy with hits and, assuming they would spend the token, focus results. Rerolling results that should be hits hoping to get crits is asking for problems.
I don't see where it says that rerolls are modifications?
EDIT: Found it in this thread: http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/87083-faq-heavy-laser-cannon-target-lock/page-2

I wonder the same question, but I use it and I love it, so I recomend the same, use it, and later you could ask again, or maybe you correct the question to "Why don't use the HLC???", greettings
Edited by Kaxel VoferI knew about the re rolls keep crits with targwt lock but until jonus nwver considered the possible crits on initial attack.
Stupid question but does that mean that when Krassis re rolls one die she can keep the crit?
Basically, you roll your 4 dice and turn any initial critical hits into normal hits. After that, if you use any special ability or marksmanship or a target lock or whatever to reroll or otherwise modify the dice that yields critical hits, you may keep those critical hits
HLC rules the galaxy. At least in my little galaxy.
Mind... blown...
