Anyone have the Dice app?

By Evilnox, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I can't find any information on this on the internet.

I am curious if there is a limit on the amount of dice you can roll of one type.

I have never used any sort of application so I relaly have no idea.

Could you select 6 of one dice if you wanted to? 10? So you could make up some super beastly creature or something.

I have it, but have yet to test just how many dice can be rolled. I imagine you could combine a fair few, though.

The limit is any dice in any combination up to a total of 20 dice.

Thank you.

I am thinking about buying a kindle fire hd 8.9" tomorrow and I was interested in getting this app to go with it :)

As far as dice roller apps go this one is up there with the best. Add to that the Star Wars sound effects and... well... it's an awesome app.

I "forced" my 2 players to each buy it before we started EoE. They did, and they love it!

Plus it has all the "standard" dice so if we ever play a different game system we can still use it!

I use it for every game. I enjoy having the preset function so I can quickly select dice pools. You do still have the sound of rolling dice.

Watching 20 d 20 bounce around is entertaining.

The automatic summation of results makes it very quick to complete your turn.

The app is also a more economical. Maximsum of 20 dice. You can roll 5 yellow and 5 red and still have enough for plenty of boost dice.

I highly recommend it.

There is a max of 21 dice on my iPad, I think this is probably about the limit of the dice you would ever need.

Once you buy the app you are free to install and run it on as many iDevices you have, so you could end up rolling 42+ dice without too much effort.

I have it and use it a lot but my review of it will be weird because I'm blind. :P

I can't really use the physical dice because there are good and bad dice of the same shape (I've already wished for braille dice for EotE). I hated having people build my pools for me and put them in my hand so I could roll then and they would then read them. I let other people just roll my dice after a while. Getting everyone to put the dice in a specific spot so I could pick them to make my pools was annoying. So I love the dice app.

Its VERY easy to build your dice pool... Just drag and drop. I'm not 100% accurate with it but I am close. And it does EotE dice and the regular dice for games like Pathfinder.... But I still need someone to read the results for me... So I also wished the dice app would say the resilts aloud.

Yes, 20 die limit on the iPhone. It has standard d20, d12, d10 (10s and 1s), d8, d6, d4 as well. There are several background images to choose from and 5 different sound effect settings. I thought the WHFRP dice app was cool. This one kicks its butt.

It also has the x-wing dice too. It's very cool, and with it's last update it shows you the final result, instead of having to match and cancel symbols yourself. Definitely worth the price.

I've been using the app pretty much since FFG released it during the EotE Beta period, and I've found it incredibly handy to have. It also frees up the two sets of physical dice I have to be used by other players if necessary, since I can just use my iPhone to roll whatever dice I need for my NPCs.

it's pretty pricy at $5, but given it's an official Star Wars product and that Lucasfilm very much enjoys making money, it's not surprising that it's pricy. However, you do get some fun bells & whistles with the app, such as the previously mentioned dice tally option, various SW-themed sound sets and backgrounds, and the fact that you can roll regularly dice as well as the specialized dice sets for X-Wing and the RPG.

Oh hey, it does tally up the results now. That's very handy.

I guess I haven't looked at it in a while. :)

I'm curious. How do you assemble the dice pool without being able to see it? Do you have a good idea of where each dice is located on the top bar and just drag to the far left before starting? I'd imagine building your own pools from the physical dice would be easier since they each have their own shape and number of sides, it's more a case of getting the other players to separate the "bad" dice from the "good" dice and collecting from each of those pools.

If FFG guys are reading this forum, time to do a readout of the dice tally on the app. It's not exactly difficult in programming terms to do it and will expand your audience.

First the dice app is really a beautiful program. I can't stress enough how real the dice move and sound when rolled. This program by all accounts is top notch and worth every penny. Full disclosure, I use the kindle version.

To answer your question Fuzzy the dice pool are assembled extremely easily. First you can determine what dice you want to use as to eliminate the dice that are not used in the game you are playing. Those dice are all displayed clearly at the top bar and you tap on that dice for each dice you want and then roll. Afterwards it displays the results for you; check resolved quickly and easily.

I don't think it is any harder or easier to play with the app versus the physical dice having used both. Since the dice are color coded people seem to figure out the process pretty easily.

I highly recommend the app and imagine it will only get better as AoR and the third installment of FFG's Star Wars RPG system.

I think Fuzzy was asking the previous poster, who mentioned being blind, how they were assembling the dice pool when using the Dice app.

Yep, I know how I see it and use it, but how does it work if your blind. Thanks centralx, I've had the app for months now, very happy with it, great review though.

Sorry that's what I get for just breezing through the thread. You would have to have some assist you if you're blind. Wouldn't be a bad idea to add sound for that but I am not sure other than voice command how you could develop the app so the person could build their pool. I am not even sure how a blind person could play the game even in just a physical form without at least one person with sight assisting them. It would be worth looking into. No one should be left out of the fun of gaming if it can be helped.

lol... omg... I'm trying to write this message about how empowered I am and I had such a terrible time quoting the original so PLEASE forgive me for not doing so. How humbling. :P

You're right about how it could have worked with the dice if people just kept them in specific place but, I guess, when people are having fun playing a game they just forget. So then we had someone else build the pools for me. I really didn't care about rolling the dice myself so I would have been ok with someone doing that too! But the other players were superstitious about rolling for someone else.... so they hand them to me and I roll them... then they have to read them. I didn't really like that. So we got the app.

With the app, I use an ipad. The dice are lined up in a specific order at the top of the screen. We put little sticky tabs on the ipad case directly over the points where the dice are. I've memorized the order and I can easily drag the dice I need into the main area of the screen and shake the ipad to roll them. The tricky part is clearing the dice. You pinch on the ipad screen to bring up the menu where you can do that but sometimes I pinch where a die is and the menu doesn't come up.

Hey, FFG, I found braille dice for Pathfinder... hint hint!!!!

No problem, I appreciate the info on how you manage.

Did you have someone who might be in the same boat? Or were you just curious? Either answer is great, btw. :)

My interest is two-fold. One, I run a lot of open games at the FLGS and I wanted to know how to make games more inclusive, now if I get a blind player I've got some ideas. Two, I'm a programmer and I do a lot of mobile apps. It's interesting to hear how people interface with it if they can't see it.

Seriously it's not a lot of work to get the results to be automatically read out. I hope someone at FFG reads your comments here and gets the app updated.

Really wish they post one of these apps out for WP8.

Honestly, I don't understand the delay. It would only behoove them to push one of these apps out into the Microsoft store for Windows 8, considering how many laptops and Windows 8 tablets I see around the gaming table these days. From there it's pretty much a straight transfer coding wise from Windows 8 to WP8.

There used to be a decent explanation as to why WP8 didn't have all the official apps when compared to isheep and android. Now there is just no excuse with the plethora of cheap windows tablets out there running Windows 8.

For the record, the 20-die limit applies to the Android version as well. (Kept seeing people who tested the limit had been on Apple devices, so I had to check.)

I very much appreciate all the imput. I read mostly doom and gloom about the app, but most people tend to complain on a forum rather than log onto a forum to give priase.

I will definetely get this app then, thanks everyone.

Jeff

Keeping your game inclusive is awesomesauce!! I hope someone out there gets to enjoy the opportunity you're helping to create. :)
