Tie Advanced Resurgent

By Englishpete, in X-Wing

Some of us were discussing this in another post, but with the emergence of wave 3 I believe that the Tie Advanced has a new life.

I built this squad up.

Pilot: Captain Jonus
Tie Bomber (22)
Upgrades:

  • Seismic Charge (2)

Pilot: Tempest Squadron Pilot
Tie Advanced (21)
Upgrades:

  • Concussion Missiles (4)

With Jonas along a focus becomes less important with Concussion Missiles specifically as one miss turns to a hit and you can reroll 2 more dice.

Also, the Advanced has shields for crit evasion and a pretty good dial as well as 3 natural defense dice. Jonas ability also does not use an action so we can focus or evade to keep him alive to help deliver the missiles.

Once the payload is away, the Advanced can act alone if needed and Jonas isn't a disaster as a fighter.

PS is low, but that isn't the end once missiles are away.

For 4 points you are probably better of with cluster missile in my opinion. They play into Jonas' ability really well and especially against any lower agility ships you will get more bang for your buck.

That is a great point, a mix of Concussion and Cluster may be the way to go. Even as far as 2 Cluster and one Concussion. I shall ponder that.

Another option is to drop one advanced and add 2 mook Ties. Makes target choices harder and early bumps could misalign the enemy.

My very first test of the Bomber was this:

Jonas

Ptl, Homing Missile

Scimitar Squadron

Proton Torp

Tempest Squadron

Cluster Missile

Tempest Squadron

Cluster Missile

The two Tempest squadrons screen the two bombers. I've been able to launch all 4 missiles on the same turn more than once, which is completely devastating, especially against ships like the falcon.

The bomber doesn't have evade...so it would be focus or barrel roll. :-)

nice list. im thinking along similar lines, even a single tie-advanced in the mix would give ur squad more options - esp later in the game. Here is a squad ive posted on another thread...

Total Squad Points: 100
Pilot: Captain Jonus Tie Bomber (22) Upgrades: Squad Leader (2) Seismic Charge (2)
Pilot: Gamma Squadron Pilot Tie Bomber (18) Upgrades: Assault Missiles (5)
Pilot: Gamma Squadron Pilot Tie Bomber (18) Upgrades: Assault Missiles (5)
Pilot: Storm Squadron Pilot Tie Advanced (23) Upgrades: Assault Missiles (5)
6,4,4,4 pilot skill, should get shots off b4 x-wing rookies, lesser tie-fighters and most importantly Scimitar Squadron Pilots.
i might go up to 4 bombers eventually (only own3 for now) but having a tie-advanced in the mix gives u some options in the longer game.

from what im seeing on other threads the two new squads on the block are B-Wing based and bomber based. sure the hwk-290 and the shuttle r popping up in the odd squad as well but i think its the b-wings and bombers that will have the biggest impact on the new landscape of competitive x-wing.

Im guessing the bomber squads matchup versus the B-Wing squads will dictate which one will dominate tournament play. im looking fwd to testing these head to head and seeing which one is better versus the other.

To be fair that's probably because B-wings and bombers are less niche than the Lambda and HWK. B-wings and Bombers would be interesting to compare because they are both incredibly customizable ships. The only ship that beats them for number of upgrade slots is a slave-one firespray and the only ones that match it are the fire-spray and y-wing. The B-wing Bomber fight is going to come down to how people end up loading them out more than anything else.

Vader never really has left the scene. My current build runs Vader and a bomber together to great effect. :)

I call it "Cobra Kai"

Vader with swarm tactics and assault missiles

Mauler with veteran instincts and stealth

Howl with squad leader

Scimitar with assault missiles and seismics.

Its sort of a wave 3 Additional Damage squad.

Vader hasn't but the other pilots have never really taken off. I think the existence of Jonus making missile ships better, and Ten making crits a bigger deal we're probably going to see them used a bit more often, if not in tournaments then at least on a casual and experimental basis.

Maarek never will take off because of his cost (unless we get a missile that specifically deals crit damage.) I've never seen anyone, ever run a storm squadron pilot in their squad. Jonus will bring some life back to tempests, but as far as a resurgency, I guess we'll see.

I have been tweaking at the squad and settled on this. It has plenty of ships and several good flight options. Also, no one target sticks out after the missiles are away. I'd keep Jonus behind at range 1 of the Adv's until that happened, potentially denying the opposition a shot on him early game. I used one of each missile to allow squad leader when each is fired and both types do well with Jonus ability.
