How far can characters see

By eddie4102000, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Hi.

First time DM here. I'll be running my first game on in a couple of days and I have a quick question.

I've been through the rulebook and can't find any obvious mention of how far characters can see in given lighting conditions. Is there a rule for that that I'm just missing?

Is there a hard and fast number, or does it require a perception check? Or is it simply something like 2d10 * PB meters?

Thanks.

It's never mentioned anywhere. You're dealing with run-of-the-mill humans, so use common sense.

Yes, this. Whatever seems to make sense in the conditions you've established.

No specific rule; as suggested, use common sense.

For simplicity in rules terms, I'd just say that you would make perception/awareness/scrutiny checks exactly as normal, but just apply difficulty to the checks based on how dark it is.

So, if you'd normally have expected a challenging (+0) Awareness check to 'spot' whatever it is, it's now -10, or -20, depending on light level. Things you might not have required a check for before, become +20 or +30 checks.

Don't feel worried about making stuff like this up on the spot; given a choice between a GM ruling 'for now' that you can check later at leisure, and spending 5-10 minutes trying to find where the hell the rules for situation X are in a book, 9/10 players I've ever come across would prefer to just get on with the game.

Hope you had a good time. Remember Quick Gamesmastering Rules #1-4:

  1. The GM is right.
  2. In any case of irreconcilable disagreement between GM and rulebook, the rulebook is wrong.
  3. Is it fun, interesting, scary, challenging or otherwise engaging for the players? If not, stop wasting time.
  4. In all other circumstances, see Rule #1.
