second quest in Labyrinth

By renediffie, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi guys

I have been a bit disappointed with the two quests you can play after finishing the very first one. In honor among thieves the heroes simply ignored the objective and gathered as much gold as possible. This resulted in an overlord win but the heroes gathered so much gold that the rest of the game that they steamrolled the overlord.

The other quest(i forgot the name, but its the one where the overlord is tasked with killing all the heroes) i have only played once but it seemed almost impossible to get through this one as the heroes, if the overlord picks his monsters well.

It seem to me like FFG designed both of these quests very lobsided as a designchoice. Meaning the winner of the first quest can choose where to go from here and have a huge advantage through the rest of the game. I think we can all agree that FFG makes som odd decisions balance-wise but i have come to terms with that. But these quests just seem very poorly designed in my humble oppinion. We have come to the point where we simply will replace these quests with quests from the main game. Does anyone here have a different view on this or did you find a better solution than we did?

There is a loose rule I feel needs to be placed in some of these games. Heroes are heroes and should act like heroes. Greed is apart of being heroes, but they really need to keep the goal in mind. If you don't act like that, then you are not acting in the heart of the game. Same is true for the OL. OL is evil and should play in the likeness of the evil and ruthless OL. I, as the OL, had a chance to throw a match for my advantage, but I didn't, and, sadly, I won that encounter.

As far as the first quest with Sarena, I didn't win that as the OL and I had some pretty nasty beast. Oh, but it came close and I reclaimed the sunstone for myself. I feel that was our most exciting quest to date and would play it again in a heart beat!

PS: The OL won the one with Honor Among Thieves, correct? The OL gets two EXP. having the experience of almost one whole campaign of LoR under our belt, let me give you a secret. I won 3 quests out of the 10 (rumors) and now we are staring down the final. The heroes are in good shape, but I am not in the want either. This final is going to be epic and it's because I feel this is very balanced.

I would tell that OL, take that win they just gave you and run with it! They don't know what foolery they have done. *insert evil laugh here*

I do agree with some of your points. On the other hand, when the game gives you obvious advantages i feel weird for not taking advantage of them. Speaking of "heart of the game". How about having a treasure hunter? Wouldnt his instincts tell him to gather all dem shinies?

How about the other quest favoring the overlord? How was your experience with that?

And i do agree that the very first quest is very well balanced. It was a very tense battle where i as the overlord won with a "buzzerbeater" :) It goes down as the second most exciting quest we ever played.

The next campaign we will have treasurer hunter, so then I will have a more honest answer later. As I said before, greed is apart of LoR. That's the whole reason for the heroes are there. But they are out to help their charismatic dwarf, like it or not. They are STILL heroes.

The OL should 100% take advantage of the quests for the OL just like the heroes should do the same. But we are all out for the fun of the game. I avoided "Heart of the Wild" when I could have taken advantage for my heroes while they where down, but I opted not to in the name of fun. I may not be so willing next time in the name of new content.
